My 2004 turbo lite is about to hit the 100,000 mile mark soon. It has been an outstanding vehicle as far as repairs go, but I read all the problems with the automatic and I'm wondering what you think about my chances of having issues soon. The trans was serviced at 35,000 miles and a tune up with wires at 70,000. We are still able to get fuel mileage in the high 20's and it runs great. Should i trade/sell it or ride it till the wheels fall off??

Mod it to hell, and ride it till the wheels fall off.

If you don't have Stage 1 then the HP and torque you're making is well below the range that can and often does kill these transmissions. And besides, even if there is a substantially higher failure rate than industry average, that doesn't mean they ALL fail! Geez, Chrysler has sold over a million PT Cruisers, the vast majority being auto trans equipped. If you still like the car, and it's still serving you well at 100k miles, then keep it for as long as you can.
Damn, 100k on an '04......I've only got 20k on my '04 Lite. |

Yep, not all auto tranny's fail. You just never know, though. My wife's '01 150 hp base model went out at 81k. It had been serviced regularly and not abused.

You have 100,000 miles and this is your first post? Where ya been?
Welcome. If you haven't already, I'd have the tranny flushed - find a plce that has the right machine. Since you're off warranty, I'd use ATF + 5 - it is better than ATF + 4, but hasn't been accepted by Chrysler yet. I had a '92 Dodge Spirit - went 195,000 miles before the tranny decided it didn't want to shift - and I NEVER had any transmission service done - so you have more miles to enjoy.

Actually, the car is 3 years old in 2 weeks and has only had one warranty repair. The gear shift cable broke at about 6,000 miles. One set of tires, one set of brakes on the front and one tune up, plugs and wires at 70,000 miles. Depending on who is driving, wife gets high 20's close to 29, and I get low 20's, but I have more fun. I have been looking at the Caliber SRT-4 as a replacement, if you guys think this PT is close to the end of its useable life. Right now it has some value, sitting broken with a broken trans or ??? it has almost no value.

Caliber!?!?! That thing is Uhgly. To me a high milage car is a green light to modify and improve on it. It's paid for, it's proven itself to last, and it's ready to become a true classic. After 100,000 miles this is when you get down to the nitty gritty and start replacing worn parts with high performance pieces. Instead of waiting for your transmission to fail, be proactive and replace the transmission with a high performance trans package. Not only will it last longer, but it will improve the way your PT shifts.
I've got almost 80,000 on my PT and I just replaced a few engine parts that took me a couple days to install. Now the PT is running better than ever. I figure once the car is paid off and your not making a monthly, you will have a free 5,000 per year to do upgrades. That's a lot of bang for the buck. Or you could get a Caliber and get stuck with another monthly payment again and get stuck on another manufacturers maintenance schedule. But to some thats comforting so no biggie.
