Default BOV question

I have seen on this site where people make mods to the BOV by either a spring or installing a brass "T" with a small hole. my question is why not just disable it completely if a little added boost (every little bit helps)as all you are trying to get or am I missing something?

thanks

You're asking why not block off the Blow Off Valve???
You'd have more lag.

sorry guys , guess I am dense and still need some more spoon feeding. what did meangreen mean by no BOV no turbo? I thought "blowoff" means to allow excessive boost blow off or be released and someone told me these small turbos are only good for 14-18 pounds so I don't see how that will hurt the turbo since all boost goes into the next cylinder open on intake and one cylinder is always open. and what was did hharp mean by I will be replacing cartridges....what cartridges? this is my first turbo so please forgive my ignorance.

If you are taking about blocking off the stock diverter valve somehow you will be putting a ton of back pressure on the blades of the turbo. This will over time will cause the turbo to fail or possibly blow a gasket or two by increasing pressure in your engine at the wrong time.

Blow off valves and diverter valves basically do the same thing either by diverting the excess pressure (between shifts or when you accelerate and let off the gas closing the throttle body) or by blowing off or venting the excess gas pressure into the atmosphere. This release of pressure keeps that pressure off the turbo and also keeps the blades spinning faster between shifts and reduces turbo lag. I have an '04 srt4 Stg1 with a Forge BOV and you can feel the difference between having a BOV and not having a BOV when you are accelerating and shifting fast. (If the tires don't loose traction in 3rd and 4th.. lol)

Just be careful adding boost, too much and all you get it a big pop! (and no more engine) Make sure you have at least a good accurate boost gauge to see what you are truly running before you raise it.

I have a '05 srt-4 (same engine as PT turbo) and I'm running Stage 2 with the stock surge valve. A bov is not needed unless you plan on upping the boost and boosting, spiking, over 20 psi. In hot weather(around 90*) I'll spike 20 and drop to 15 at redline. In cooler weather I'll spike 17-18 dropping to 14-15 at redline. Stock surge valve works just fine. The Mopar bov is a cool noise maker and not a true bov. They have been known to leak, too, but not always and if you aren't going to go crazy with a lot of boost should work out fine. If you are planning to up the boost over 20 psi then the HKS bov is the best. You'll also need a UCP (uppercharge pipe) which is made out of metal and allows you to have a flange on it in order to mount the HKS bov. Remember, like batlin said, without a boost gauge do not raise the boost without a boost gauge or you will blow your engine.
