Are the half shafts shorter in PTs with automatics? BTW, I remember a thread on this subject a few years ago, too. I had the '02 5 speed at the time and my wife had recently wrecked her '06 automatic. Her car turned wider than mine did.

Thanks for the reminder. Now I have to find that old thread.

A careful search and study of the part numbers for axles, half shafts and steering racks would probably be the most helpful. My understanding is that those parts didn't change from year to year through the production life of the Cruiser but only changed according to the trans type. This has confused a number of owners and more than a few vendors have gotten it wrong also. To add to the confusion, the right side and left side axles are different part numbers and can't be switched either. If you were to purchase from a dealer, for example, they would use your VIN # as a filter to target the correct pieces. But it seems that dealer parts are few to none so the aftermarket may be the only choice which means the more you know, the better.

I recall seeing some posts where the wrong axles were inadvertently installed which led to problems or failures. I'm rusty about the details but I believe it has something to do with the splines moving too far in or too far out with the range of motion of the suspension. So consider my thoughts as guesses and subject to correction.

That's what I thought I remembered from the earlier thread on turning radius, but whether that was what made the auto equipped cars turn wider or not, I don't recall.

Anyway, my 5 speed turned tighter than my auto does now.

Not to mention the intermediate shaft on the GT's.

I recommend if you want the correct axles the first time as well a source for custom application like the one mentioned from Brian aka 2step contact : DTA

Personally IMO it is really all about simply learning how to drive the car you are in. Many vehicles need compensations for things like turning radius allowances.
