As a former Cobra helicopter pilot with a turbo shaft engine we had to idle for two min. before shutdown to let the engine temperature cool and stabilize. However, we were still sucking massive quanties of air into the engine. We would also monitor EGT (exhaust gas tempture) which would drop. In the cooler months I would idle my cruise for 60 sec no problem. Now that the outside temperature is 95-100 I have not been doing that. I noticed a few times the engine temp would actually rise during the cool down. Lack of air flow over the coolers. One time I pointed my car into the wind for the cool down and the temp. did not go up. What I am doing now is to turn the air off for about the last half mile on my daily drive home and drive easy and idle for 20-30 sec. I have also removed the rear hood seal on the driver's side and changed to mobil-1. The idle time is no big deal to me because I did it for so many years. I would be more interested in having a temperature gauge to monitor the internal temp or some other relevant parameter which would give a good indication that the temp has cooled to a point that it would safe to shut down. For many the turbo timer is a great option, as for me I like to have the final say on shutdown.

As one who has a mechanical water temp gauge installed you may be interested to know that I've seen my gauge peg @240 degrees when outside temp is up and car has been run hard and then idled...it takes all of the 3 minute cooldown to get it down below 210 . That being said how well do you think the water-cooled turbo is being cooled since water boils @212 ? I know coolant would raise boiling point but to what?

Yes, but is the water cooling circulating or is it just a jacket . If it's circulating water than the heat dissipates better.
Think I'll just wait 1-3 minutes and get Synthetic oil. ![]()
