I see some manufacturers are now suggesting timing belt changes after four years - regardless of mileage.

I know the NA PT engine is free-wheeling (so a broken belt is not the end of the world) but what about the Turbo? Doe sit self-destruct?

The turbo is also a "Free-wheeling" engine as far as the valve to piston clearance, but at a WOT high rpm belt break there have been a few engines reported head damage with the valves hitting each other (intake & exhaust in the same cylinder when both are fully open)

on my SRT i did the timming belt and waterpump at 60K because the seal on the water pump was leaking causing my engine to run at 220ish when crusing.
now its sitting at 87k with no problems

when changing it, it was a PITA!!!! but took me about 5 hrs
you need a Cirysler pulley puller to get it off

so if it took me 5 hrs on an srt which has a little more room it might take longer to get it done. than again we just got the HO and im still looking to see where everything is at.

I have a similar question. I took my 03 PT GT to the dealer because the A/C wasn't cooling. They just called me to say that the A/C suction line needed to be replaced and while they were checking they also noticed that the water pump was starting to leak. Fortunately, those repairs are covered by the extended warranty I bought for the car last year, after the original expired.

The dealer is telling me that since they're replacing the water pump, that I should consider replacing the timing belt as well since they're going to be in there and that it'll cost $334 (the belts are not covered by the warranty).

My car has 60K miles and I put an average of 10K a year. I read that Chrysler recommends changing the belt at around 100K miles.

My question is this: I plan to sell my PT within the next year or 2, so the car should be under 80K by the time I sell it. Do you think is a good idea to replace the timing belt now or should I leave it to whoever will buy the car from me when I sell it?

i would have them change it.
if they have to do the pump then do the belt with it.
the belt should be under warrenty you need to check its part of the engine.
and make the whole thing work together.
thats pretty stupid for then to say its not covered.

when i changed my timming belt and waterpump in the SRT. i did it as 60k

How/where can I confirm if the timing belt replacement should be covered by the warranty?

look at your warrenty broushure and if it says your engine is covered they the belt is too. the belts are part of the engine and the engine cannot function without it.
they have to honor that warrenty and they cant charge you for what your already paying for each month.
