Default New 03, first problem?

I just traded in my 02 for a shiney new 03 GT, we picked it up, brought it to the house for a quick stop, my daughter was sleeping so I left my wife in the car with her, running with AC on, when I came back 2-3 min the car had shutdown. My wife said it did nothing funny, just shut off. It started right back up and runs fine, I haven't pulled any codes yet but no lights are on. Has Chysler built some sort of cool down shut down sequence into them, or just a fluke, temp was normal at the time, so I am not too concerned, YET, but thought I would ask the masses out there.
Thanks,
Tom

mine does that to me as well. I've had it in already and they said the dreaded 'everything is up to spec'. *shrug* all i know is mine does it frequently and it's really starting to annoy me. [xx(]

I don't like to let mine idle for too long, simply because the engine compartment gets SO-O-O-O-O bloody hot! I have let it idle at the bank a few times for more than 2-3 minutes, while using the ATM...car idled fine. The temp gauge stayed in the middle, but then, IT ALWAYS registers in the middle! (Not worth much, I'm afraid). I want to do the column three gauge pod like so many of the other members have done. Definitely one of the gauges will be an accurate temperature gauge!

Tom,
Mine actually does it when parked, or if I'm idling at a stop light for a bit. The really odd thing is it happens at the most random times for no apparant reason. My main concern isn't when it does it when it's parked and idling in neutral, but more along the lines of when it dies a few seconds before I am about to put the car back into first gear and get on my way after sitting at a stop light.
As far as fault codes, it hasn't thrown *any*
Gary

ZZ,
Your last name wouldn't happen to be Gibbons, Hill, or Beard would it?[8D]
You do let your engine run for atleast 60 seconds before you shut it down right? It is VERY important to keep oil moving through the turbo to cool it down, if not it will cook the oil in the turbo, eventually destroying the turbo. Trust me I have been a wrench my entire life, since about 12 years old when I first tore apart my first lawn mower, UHHHH no it never ran again but many lessons were learned. And for the first time I have decided to go synthetic in my vehicle just because of the heat from the turbo. Even my race motor That was a 800+ hp small block[8)] used organic oil but the turbo changes everything.
I have a three gauge pod on the way, but it will have oil press, boost and an exhaust pyro. I may go ahead and order a water temp and put it in its own cup.
Gary,
Mine hasn't done it again------- yet, and I have tested it quite a few times this weekend.[:I]
Thanks for the responses, if you ever find anything let everyone know.
Tom

I haven't tested to see if my GT will do this yet, but I have a question for you folks this has happened to - when the engine stops, does it result in all the idiot lights coming on? If so then it would lead you to believe the computer wasn't expecting the engine to shut down, and there's a problem. A "programmed shutdown" should be a bit more graceful than that.

Do you both have the 5-speed?

Finally, on leaving the engine on before turning it off, does it say to do that in the manual (I'll be looking myself when I get a chance)? I know I haven't been leaving it to idle before shutdown and I'm betting most other Turbo owners don't either.

Mine is an auto, when it shut down I did have the yellow check engine light. My wife, who was in the car when it died said there was nothing funny, just shut down. Car was in park. It hasn't done it again---------YET.
As far as the cool down, I haven't seen it in the owners manual yet,
But in all my years as a fleet mechanic, and everyone I know that ran turbos, it has been common practice to cool the turbo down by letting engine idle to circulate oil through the turbo. Of course not everyone did it, but I never had the time to try to do a "study" on it.

I too had the yellow CEI (check engine light pop on) but there were no stored codes in my ECU.
I have the 5 speed manual by the way.
As far as the manual there is a yellow insert some people got that give the cool down period run-down.
I usually let mine idle for ~3 minutes or so, as i wind up staying untill whatever song is playing finishes anyway it's not a huge deal, and I have owned more than my fair share of turbo cars in the past so everything I'm playing with stems from those.
Ironically enough mine did it to me once today. It was mid 90s and VERY humid, AC *off*, clutch was fully 'engaged' with the trans in neutral, idling at a stop light and it just up and died. Threw a CEI at me.
It's definatly becoming irrating trying to figure out what it is. I've traced *every* vacuum line in the car and checked for fault codes and nothing. *Shrug* I'll be ripping further into it tommorow when i have time, and i hope i find a stupid silly little thing like a sensor's wiring harness not plugged in fully or something of that sort. *shrug*
