does removing the silencers from the air box really improve performance or not? I hear it does and then i hear it doesnt. please let me know.

Anything that reduces the air resistance going into the turbo will help. The real question is how much resistance do the silencers add? The real culprit I would think is the stock air filter. I never tried just removing the silencers. I went from the stock set-up to the cold air intake. While I didn't do any formal dyno measuring...I believe I gained more performance increase doing that than putting the dual exhausts on.

From my experience this is true. I recently replaced the stock air-filter with a K & N (drop-in/high-flow) Performance Air-Filter--NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE--turbo spools up faster, improved acceleration. [8)] For now at least, I'm leaving the silencers in place. |

I did it all at once so I cannot say which helped more, but doing it all is the way to go. I am also replacing the tube from the turbo up to get rid of the silencer built into that. It chokes the tube down considerably. I am having a silicone 90 degree reducer made to go from the 2.5 inch turbo inlet and then put a 3 inch tube up from the turbo to the air box. They are being made in black and I am going to paint the aluminium tubing black to keep a close-to-stock apprearance.

If you really want a performance boost, remove the whole air box and put in a cold air intake. It's not that expensive, and it also improves the look of the engine compaartment.
