I have a '04 2.4 Turbo GT. I have been smelling fumes for the last 5 months. Last week I had to replace the gas tank-there was a hairline crack where the filler tube connects. Has anyone has a similar experience?
I was rear ended in Feb (only slight bumper damage). The insurance refuses to cover the repair saying a minor collision would not cause a crack in the gas tank. The only other explanation is a defective part and Chrysler is saying it was caused by the impact. |

Good chance it was caused by the accident but as always, the insurance company doesn't want to pay. Depending on how much the repair was it probably isn't worth getting a lawyer but you might speak with your insurance company and maybe they will go to bat for you.

Thanks for your input. I have my agent looking into it. I'm a 40 year customer with State Farm. Hopefully they will go to bat for me.

I have been on numerous PT Forums since 2001, and I've never heard of a gas tank leak - it had to be caused by the accident.

I guess I will be the first. My wife has a 2001 PT with only 22k miles, never been in accident and we have the same problem. It will cost $1,300 to replace the fuel tank. Looking for cheaper alternatives if anyone knows of any, I would greatly appreciate hearing them. Thanks.

They do have a fuel tank repair kit in most auto parts stores but make sure it's for plastic tanks....it does work depending on the crack.
