Default rear park brake shoes

Chaps,

Has anyone recently changes the rear park brake shoes?
I have to do mine as there is almost no park brake (was like this when I bought the car).

I went to Murays auto parts an the guys there were muppets, first guy said no problem but order them and it will be 2 days, so when I went back the next guy said my order was canceled as they has ordered standard shoes for rear brakes from a non turbo model, not the park brake shoes for turbo model. He then said that it must be main dealer only and he couldn't order them.

One autozone said it was nearly $70 and 3+ weeks to get them, another said he couldnt order them, the third Autozone guy has ordered some for me and I paid only $27 for them and $7 for the spring kit.

There's something fishy going on and I feel that when I get the parts they are'nt going to fit

I have a haynes manual but does anyone know the part number for these park brake shoes?

First off .... this is in the Turbo forum, yes? But we're talking about shoes, and not pads? I've never heard of a turbo with rear shoes.

Anyways, after looking at a brake manufacturer site, IF you do indeed have rear drums, there are only two part numbers: one for all 2000-2003 drum brakes, and another for all 2004+ drum brakes.

Alot of the auto parts shops do a crappy job crosslisting thier part numbers, so sometimes you have to have them crossreference other years or models that you KNOW have the same parts on them. So research the parts at the actual brake shoe manufacturer's site first, then go in armed with the knowledge that a $8/hr parts jockey doesn't have.

You are correct I posted in the turbo forum specifically for thast reason, the turbo has rear discs for service brakes but inside the recessed portion of the disc is an area for brake shoes to opperate like just like a normal drum brake only smaller.

Toyota/Lexus have been doing this set up since the early 90s and Chrysler obviously adopted it at some point since then.

no one changed the parke brake shoes on a GT then?

Surely some of you guys (with a manual) must have been using the handbrake to 'steer from the rear' in the snow ect?

Cool Re: rear park brake shoes

What's "snow"?
(I'm assuming that you tried adjusting the hand brake cable?)

I did try the adjustment, but it won't go any more... I think the previous owner must have been stone deaf and drove around with the 'bong bong' going all day while the park brake was still on.

Crewzin is "off-line" for a couple of days.
He'll probably have a good answer when he gets back.

OK. So we're talking parking brake shoes. I'm betting this will end up being a dealership only item as praking brake shoes should last the life of a car.

I finaly got round to trying to asjust the park brake shoes, I used the little wheel threough the slot in the brake back plate and wound them as far as they would go, my park brake now engages at one notch less but it's still poor.

Guess I need to figure out how to get the disc/drum off and change the shoes.
Anyone had the disc/drum of a PT GT? I didn't so\pend lokg looking at it but I couldn't figure it out and the haynes manual shows the brake shoe removal with the disc already off.

Just take the caliper and bracket off and the disk comes off. Be sure to note everything about the position of the caliper before you take it off of the bracket. It took me a little while to get it back together right because I didn't. Not a big deal, just look at it closely or snap some pictures.
