Default replacing oil filter only

Is this possible? I have 1200 km now on my GT and wants to replace oil filter only for now and change both oil and filter at 3000km.

I did notice that the oil filter location is at the bottom in line with oil pan. I am not sure if oil in the pan will come out as well.

I must say, I absolutely love my GT and although I drive it hard, I want it to last long as possible.

The oil in the pan shouldn't drain if you just change the filter. I've gotta ask though, why? If you're already down there with a filter wrench and a drain pan, why not drain the oil and replace with fresh?? Oil is cheap, engines aren't. Add a 13MM wrench to your stuff and drain it all!

^^
Oil filter is in a same level as bottom oil pan. So is there like valve that stops oil from oil pan coming out of the filter hole. I am going to take out the filter and find out.

I love to replace both oil and filter, but with lot of talk about factory oil containing additives to assist in proper break-in, I want to leave the original oil in till at least 3000km. I personally do not believe everything I hear about proper break-in procedures, but with most people changing first oil and filter at 5 to 6000km, changing filter at 1200km ( also have big magnet on the filter to contain most of metal fillings inside the filter) and changing oil and filter at 3000km will be more than enough. At 6000km, another oil and filter change, and change every 4000km till 15000km. Than, switch over to Mobil 1.

I changed my oil and filter at 600 miles. The SRT4 using the same engine as our PT GT has Mobil 1 from the factory so there should be no break in worries. Mine had some metal shavings at 600 so do not wait.

We made our first oil change at 1000 miles and went immediately to synthetic oil. Every 3000 miles thereafter, it will get an oil and filter change. Repeat, oil is cheap, engine are NOT!

I switched to Mobil-1 last week at 5730 miles. I will be changing oil & filter every 3000 from here on out.

If you remove the filter No aditional oil will escape. If you look at it closer you will se that it is not conected to the crankcase. It is an oil cooler/filter, There are two lines conected to it, one goes to the fuel pump and the other one goes to the turbo bearing cartridge, then to the engine.

When I changed the oil last week, I first removed the filter, a few drops fell for a while but then it stopped. Then, I proceded to open the oil crankcase bolt and let all the black crap out of there. Cosed it after three hours of dripping, replaced the filter and filled with Mobil 1.

Wow, wish I could wait three hours for the pan to stop dripping
Hopefully, after waiting 10-15 minutes, enough of the old oil is out of there that it won't cause any problems.

Ian,

If you really want to de-gunk your engine why don't you put new oil in, let the engine run for 10 minutes, then drain and refill again?

Try loosing the oil filler cap since it is a closed system. May find the oil drains a bit faster.
