I had the ghetto intake made legal yesterday. Had a custom tube bent to fit and had the PCV valve tapped in properly so it should pass emissions in Canada now.
Also borrowed Flasbk2's catch can idea and put one inline on the hose. Sound levels have REALLY increased and the amount of pull under acceleration is amazing now. It feels like it wants to pull forever. All this since the third Silencer has been removed. I do have one question though. I now notice a high pitched whine from about 4500 RPM to redline when I mash the throttle. Is this a normal noise with all the silencers removed?? Keep in mind this is my first turbo. I am familar with all of the other whoosh type noises but was unprepared for this one. Thanks all |

The turbo makes a nice whine at RPM because it is going over 50,000 RPMs you may also hear a rattle when turbo is over 12 PSI.. My service department told me it was normal. Later I found out that it is the Surge Valve. All normal noises. If you start to hear metal scratching or clinking noises then start to worry.

Never heard the high pitched noise until I replaced the downpipe yesterday. It really is QUITE loud and I was just nervous. It doesn't sound like metal scraping or anything. It is just a consistent high pitched whine as long as I am up in the RPM's. Thanks for easing my mind.

Don't worry, all you are hearing is the turbo. I have not modded my intake, other then to put a drop in K&N in, so I don't notice the sound that much. In my '87 turbo Daytona, you really could hear the thing spin up.

I love that whine. and then the "psshh" when you let go of the accelerator when under boost.

I can see why they put all those silencers in though. If I wasn't told what to expect before-hand and I heard all those noises while driving home from the dealer I would have driven it right back and told them it was broken....
![]() When you aren't ready those noises can be pretty scary...

I have removed both airbox silencers. This "third" silencer, is this in the airbox to turbo inlet pipe? Can it also be removed without hogging up the pipe? How do I go about it? I don't want to damage anything, or make any modifications that can't be returned to stock, if need be.

I have been told that the noise that I am hearing is a Wind whistle. Not sure where it would be coming from. Theory says that it is the press fitting at the bottom of the downpipe near the turbo. Ill have to disassemble it and look. I am going to post a link to a video clip later that CLEARLY demonstrates the noise if anyone is interested in hearing it. Thanks

One questions...does this wistle seem to get more intense as you get higher in RPM???
