My PT GT was built in May or June 2003 so there was no recall so far that I know of...
I have played around with different styles of shifting and found that I can make the sound unnoticable depending upon how I shift. I do agree that they gearbox is a wonderfully "stiff" unit and really is great compared with other manuals I have driven...especially for such a long shifter... Cheers,

its good to see others are hearing the same things I have. I was worried that the service guy at the dealer left a bushing or two out when the clutch was replaced due to the recall. Still the noise buggs me when driving through the parking ramp and I can hear the echo of the clunk during the shift.[:0]

Okay I am not trying to be a butt here, but are you depressing the clutch completely? When I first got mine I was used to my mustang that I had the clutch adjusted pretty high so I could pretty much tap the clutch to shift. When I got my GT I found that I had to depress it pretty far to get a smooth shift. Of course with the hydraulic clutch we cannot adjust it any higher. Just a thought.

I am not sure it should be like this but oh well...it works beautifully otherwise...
Cal Cruzer: I have tried every possible way to shift to get rid of the noise and it is possible. I'm pretty sure that it's in the design. If I shift reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal sloooooooooooooooow then the noise is gone...also when I shift really fast I don't hear it...just in the middle I hear it.... Interested to hear anyone else's impressions... LIP

I never hear my 5-speed Getrag when I shift. Mind you, I have listened to loud music and loud machinery for many years, so I usually have my Sirus volume between 20-25, and therefore I most likely wouldn't even hear my engine blow (which happened one time on a Chevy SS of mine and I didn't hear it because I was listening to Led Zeppelin III on a road trip [circa 1982]). I really am the epitome of the "old fart" that "if you hear a noise, then turn up the radio until the noise is gone" crowd.
Sorry I can't add a more technical answer, but I speak the truth.

I think it will smooth out over time too.

I went to Getrag's website and found that the 5 speed is rated for something like 330Nm which is 2920.5 lb-in and the only other vehicles that are using it are a Mercedes truck and a V-class...
Maybe that's why it feels much more heavy duty... Cheers and thanks for the responses...this is a great forum!

I have had that since the day i test drove it. I thought i was nuts. specially in low gears, when i engage the clutch and shift, as i am letting up I hear this clunk sound. I thought it was torquing on the exhaust system, but it is def clutch assembly related. I had my recall done, and it still does it.

My manual shifted GT is a March 03 build and I hear the "clunk" also when the clutch makes contact. I think part of the problem is the ECU maintains engine RPM for a second too long between shifts, this is probably to reduce emissions. I hope the ECU has been recalibrated to NOT do that since it is for "off-road use" only anyway on the Stage 1 kit.
