Default 5 speed question

Hello all,

First...This is a great forum!!!

I've had my 5 speed PT GT for about 3 weeks now. When I test drove them, I noticed that shifting between gears there was a definite noise to be heard (like a clunk). I tested quite a few 5 speeds and thought I heard it only on the first one I tested, but after retesting I think I heard it on most if not all. My car does this as well...

Coming from a very smoothly shifting Ford Probe GT, it is a weird noise to my ears...

Anyone else notice this or am I going to have to head to the dealer for some service?

Cheers,

LIP

I hear it when I am shifting slowly. When I shift at a normal pace I don't hear it. I've heard other GT 5-speed owners say it, too.

Can't say that I hear this noise much or, maybe, I have just become used to it. From my experience, the shifting becomes smoother with use, especially after 3000 miles. However, I still don't care for the position of "reverse" but have learned to live with it.

Welcome--enjoy the forum. [8D]

It's there, we have over 6000 miles on our GT 5 speed and it now shifts very smoothly. As for reverse, it a Getrag, they have reverse that way.

Thanks for the replies.
Gary03GT: Did you ever hear a small sound when shifting between gears (going up)? It is still a smooth shifting gear unit, but I definitely hear something...

Cheers,

It gets smoother and quieter after about 5000, but still makes a little noise.

Did you get the recall notice? I'm having the clutch and flywheel changed next week.

Can't say that I have heard it. My car was built 1/30/03 and I never received a recall notice.

The clunk seems common to all the 5spd. Turbos I've driven. Also the gear whine. I've been in about six different ones (friend sells them) and they all do it.

The recall involves vehicles made 10/14/2002-11/29/2002.

from my experience, i'd rather hear a solid thunk between gears than have a mushy box. I prefer that stiff mechanical feel...it lets you know there some "meat" behind your tranny and it's not flimsy...
