Good luck and let us know what you find as I have no problems doing different things !
RE"I have no problems doing different things !" <------- HA HA HA!

I do and its called understanding risk, and then you try to midigate that risk, for the solution that you have chosen. But in all seriousness if it was any place else, I'd most likely do it in a heartbeat. Both my mechanic and I didn't feel comfortable performing a splice in that area. But since we are entering the holiday season I will be able to spend more time getting to know the car and looking around for a better place. I brought it in May and it only has 5100 miles on it. If that area is the one that I have to tap into then a custom fitting will be machined for it. What I'm envisioning is a TEE fitting with the same hose fittings as the stock setup. So all you have to do is to insert the probe and slip on the hoses. We want to ensure that we are getting the correct amount of flow through it. He and I are both learning on these cars so it will take us a bit before we hit our stride on some things. He knows how I am about my cars so he won't do anything on them that he doesn't feel comfortable with. But I really do appreciate the help that you and Gearhead provided.

I'm cruising toward an STI.

So did you get your gage installed macster ?
YUP

I just finished installing it. I went with an electrical gage. I didn't want fight with the hassal of getting the probe for the mechanical gage through to the engine compartment. So I ordered an electrical gage from Summit racing. I installed it without any problems. The electrical gage is the way to go, its much easier to install. I don't know how you guys were able to route the probe for the mechanical gage, the hole that I wanted to use would have to be routed out because I have a lot of othere items going through it. I used the same fittings etc, that Gearhead called out in his message. I'm running 180 to 195 degrees. It's much more accurate than the factory temp gage.

Thanks again to you and Gearhead for all your help.

Alan,

First< I would like to compliment you an a very nice gauge installation. I especially like your gauge unstallation on the column. I was thinking of mounting an Autometer boost gauge and a water temp on the coulmn and would like some more info and the column installation. How did you attach the gauges to the steering column plastic housing? Did you have to remove the housing?
Any photos or details would be appreciated.

Thanks,

ronski

ZZ, I put in a mechanical temp gauge for just that reason. When my mechanical water temp reads 190 or when it reads 240, the electrical gauge is still in the middle (a hair below center). Not very accurate. The water temp (Autometer) is the middle gauge on the dash. Also the oil pressure and volt meter is on the dash also. The EGT and Boost gauges are on the column. I like to KNOW whats goin on with the engine. I am seriously considering a Trans temp gauge too. But where the hell do I put it?? I guess i could go with the Pillar pod (dont much care for them) but the gauges are only 2 1/16 inches in diameter rather than the 2 5/8 diameter gauges that I have now.

Ronski, You caught me on the road without my digicam. I will be back by Friday and will get some close up pics and start a new thread on the gauge installation. Thanks for the compliment......

Alan,
Looking forward to you starting a new thread on gauge instalations. Your temp gauge post and photos last of the underhood intallation including a parts list was very clear and thorough. With your photos and instructions I can't mess it up. But, I'm little squimish about puting holes in the stearing column plastic and would like to see how you did it.

Thanks,

Ronski

Just be glad you radiator openings are as straight foward as they are. On my 88 daytona shelby z, allso a turbo charged car, the nose is long, and low, with a tiny opening, and just a plastic scoope under the nose to force air into the radiator. The previous owner had ripped it off along with the chin spoiler, before I got it (the car is very low and has an extreemly long nose) In the hot desert heat my gauge would just continue to climb. I have since fixed the chin spoiler, and tracked down the plastic scoop, now it seems much better. Fortunatly my 80's turbo chryslers have gauges that actually indicate real temp in real time.

Since I traded the pt with my mom, and have been driving her car, a 2002 ford, I noticed hers is the same, it stays at about 1/3 most of the time, and never fluctuates

My car actually overheated last weekend. I was in slow stop and go traffic, when my overheat light went on (along with multiple chimes) and my temp. gauge was in the red zone just below the 'H'. For some reason my radiator fan didn't come on.

I shut off the car, then read in the manual (on page 192) that I should park the car and let it idle until it cooled off (the radiator fluid was boiling fiercely at this time). After reading the manual, I restarted the car, and the fan came on immediately and cooled the water down to where the temp. gauge was right in the middle within a minute or so.

The radiator fan not coming on has me worried. I haven't been able to reproduce the issue so I'm hoping it was a one-time fluke. I checked for error codes but there were none (even more worrisome to me).

In the meantime, can anyone tell me what type of anti-freeze to use to refill my cooling system? I know a bunch boiled off while it was overheating and I need to top it off. I know I'm supposed to use a 50-50 mixture of anti-freeze with distilled water but again I don't know what type to use.

Any help would be appreciated.
I thought you were only supposed to use 'Dexcool' approved anti-freeze? You can find it at most auto stores.
