Default 03 GT Tranny whine

My 03 GT has a whining (sounds like turbo spooling) only in third gear and when im accelerating... it goes away when my foot is off the gas. Im not sure if there is a link between the two but i also get a light "rapping" sound when my foot is off the clutch at idle and goes away when i press the clutch. the tranny is not even two years old and barely has 20k on it

Would you describe this light rapping as say a Vanilla Ice type rap or more along the lines of Eminem? If it changes to a gangsta type of rapping then I suggest you get it to the shop immediately as your tranny could soon be shot. LOL

Ok Ok I could not resist.. wish you the best with your transmission and hope this was at least slighly entertaining until you can get a valid answer..
Meanwhile.. This may be of some help.. or education at worse case right?? Clutch Troubleshooting
Please do let us know what you find out in the end.. it will be a good resource for others plus I have an SRT-4 so I ask for selfish reasons too <grin>

Hi,

could be as follows: First there goes the release bearing of the clutch, which might happen if your foot is permanently riding the clutch pedal, but for other reasons too.

If that bearing is faulty it causes a rappling sound at idle only when the clutch pedal is not pushed. In that case, the clutch will not release completely anymore when the pedal is pushed, and this is absolutely disliked by the gearbox when changing gears

Check as soon as possible to avoid further damage!

The throw out bearing may require adjustment if it isn't bad. It should not make contact with the clutch fingers as it will cause premature wear. As the clutch plate wears the fingers of the clutch plate will move towards the throw out bearing requiring the adjustment.

Hi, as far as I know the throw out bearing (i.e. release bearing) can not be adjusted.

At the GT the throw out bearing and the slave cylinder of the clutch is a one-piece machanism mounted inside the bell housing of the gearbox. It can only be changed as a complete spare part, which can only be done when the whole gearbox and the clutch are removed.

Here is some tutorial on clutch problems:

Hi,

changing the clutch and/or the bearing is a lot of work, Chrysler says its 5 1/2 hours. If you only have the rappling sound, I don't know if it's worth it. But if you have troubles when shifting, eg a slight "bang" when shifting in first at standstill, of a scratching feel when shiftig up from first to second, then I would not recommend to wait (or drive it) any longer to avoid gearbox damage.

Concerning the whine in 3rd gear, mine had that too a few days ago, when it was rather cold. I don't think it has something to do with the clutch, if you feel or hear nothing of the described other symptoms.

Anyway, there are many different clutch upgrades available in the States (unfortunately not here in Europe) ... LuK, Sachs, Centerforce,

Good luck!
