Default bad timing noise

i know it has nothing to do with my K&N filter, but soon after I instaled it, my car has be lacking in power and giving what sounds like a timming tick when taking off and going threw the gears. and it is very hard on gas now. the tick is'nt as bad if i use the cheeper gas but I get a ruff idle. its almost to the point where i cant pull away from a older stock toyota. my dealer says there may be a update for the pcm, but there not sure, "we'll call you when our computers are back up" ..... 3 weeks ago, and still nothing. im comming up to a few days off here where i can take the time to take the car in again, and try to get them to look at it. i want to know if any of you have had any thing like this?

Thanx[xx(]

Sound like either low oil pressure and/or volume (noisy lifters) or bad gas (pinging).

What brand of gas are you using? What octane rating? (minimum of the GT is 91 as per the owners manual) Could also be clogged injectors (they do make that 'ticking' sounds as well, although very quietly). How many miles are on the car?

You can find 94 octane at Sunoco.

I don't go to Petro Canada, EVER! They tried to rip me for someone else who pumped and dashed without paying. I ended up having to pay double for the gas as they accused me of double pumping. Anyways, that's a different matter.

I'm not sure of the quality of gas at Petro Canada, but I do know that Esso has good quality gas and so does Sunoco (including the 92 and 94 octane). Shell has been on and off. I got caught up in that Shell bad gas a few winters ago and it gummed up my fuel level indicator. The gas at Shell seems to be good now (not the winter formula) as I just put $20 into the PT and it seems to like it.

Hmmm... the only other thing that I can think of is the oil. Who does your oil changes? What grade of oil are you using? It is full on the dipstick?

my pt dosent like esso, our esso had 93 for the highest, I dont trust shell, and over here in western canada, we dont have a sunoco. befor this major loss in power, i gas'd up at the canadian tire gas bar for about a month with there 91. And as for oil, I'm a oil tech at canadain tire, i do my own changes at work EVERY 3000kms weather it needs it or not using moble 1. and yes its to the full line on the stick. I am thinking I jumped the timming belt(unlikely), or have a bad pcm, or have a bad plug(s). im waitting for a dead day at work to put it on our scope.
