The reality is that you can get and build one of those kit car cobras and beat a stock Viper in some respects.....but it will never be a Viper.

By replacing virtually everything in the PT you could concievably beat some of the parameters of the Viper.

Do you see how absurd the statement is?

The STI is and always will be a ricer, and unless you are living in some dream world of "Fast and Frivolous" a RICER will never be a Viper, or a Ferrari, or a Saleen(not the Mustang), or a Lambo..... it will just be a rice rocket!

To put this to rest.... If you take the price difference between a stock Viper and STi, and put into mods for the STi; it is undeniable that the STi will KILL it. However, by the same merit... if you bought a '92 civic hatch (i know, i know) and put the difference in it, you would have a car easily breaking 10's. So to say if you mod this and that, this will kill that is pointless. A rustbucket civic could pull up and embarass EVERYONE. The point is how you wanna get there. A viper is a ballsout sports car that performs well. An STi is more of a tuner car that has great potential and is a phenomenal car for it's price range. Granted it may not be the fastest thing on the planet, but is sure one of if not the fastest car in it's price range. Bang for the buck dictates the STi... this is undeniable; bang in the BALLS dictates the Viper. But with the way gas is going now, i'll take the STi
whats wrong with a 92 civic hatch i know i know it sucks, i love my cruiser better. but i do belive my civic hatch will spank a stock viper. from a roll or a dead dig. and yes it still has a/c not to bad for a 4 banger to hit high 11's on nittos. did i mention it's daily driven?[8]

You know, all these discussions are pretty funny - particularly with respect to the Viper. If Dodge intended to build a straight-line car, it wouldn't look much like a Viper at all. The Viper is road-racing machine. I got reminded of that being a passenger on a road-course this weekend in a stock Viper. This thing corners, stops and accelerates at a rate that is down-right shocking. I used to race small formula cars - the Viper was faster. There is no way for equal amount of money you could make a Sti or Civic outrun it and do all the other things a Viper can. The thing has more than twice the tire, emissions compliance and a trans and motor that is just loafing at those kinds of velocities - a screaming deal if you ask me. Truly a super car.

3bar...if we are talking stock numbers and configuration... i'm pretty sure an AWD will out handle the RWD Viper, NOT accelerating out of corners but probably holding speed through the corners. I don't have them off hand, but someone should post the slalom numbers for the two cars just to see.

Pretty sure? Notice there aren't any AWD Formula 1 or Champ cars? Autoweek: 49mph in tight slalom vs 47mph for Sti, 0.97g vs 0.88g on skidpad. It's all about how much tire the car is designed around. The Viper has tire...

You will never convince a dyed-in-the-wool RICER that a japanese four banger cannot beat a Carrera GT. The normal laws of reality do not apply.

Kirby, i certainly hope your comments aren't mis-directed. I am NO ricer, but by being unable to admit to the assets held by japanese cars you are simply the mirror image of a "ricer", ie. that which discriminates against non japanese cars on the basis of the country of origin, as you appear to have used the term. I have great respect for certain japanes 4-bangers that produce rediculous amounts of horsepower for their size and/or displacement. These are by no means Euro/American super cars, which IS reflected in their price. Lets be realistic, comparing a Porsche Carrera GT to a 4 cyl. japanese car is somewhat ludacris.

3bar, thank you for posting links and specs. You're right that there are no AWD F1's, but i certainly hope there is no comparison here between an STi and a F1?? I am also not ignorant to the assets of the Viper, from the special edition LeMans commemorative GTS-R ACR edition, to the fact that the '94s came with zip-in windows. Vipers have been one of my favorite cars since conception. But to not be unable to recognize the minimal differences in the specs you've stated would be folly, especially when considering the immense cost differences.

Early muscle cars started what subaru is doing today. Take a cheap, already in production body and dump a powerful motor in. Voila a power machine for the masses. But nobody compared the to a Ferrari. Cars like that are built from the ground up Sport machines. Most importatly the production numbers are very limited wich makes them rarer and more collectable. The vipers price is not a direct reflection of its performance numbers, that is only part of the picture here.

Wow, all of this talk about the STi, and no one mentioned the Mitsubishi Evo. Most of the "ricers" they dont care about handling, drive comfort, etc. All they care about is a good 0-60 or 1/4 mile time. To them the STi is everything.
