WOW, sure glad my computers on cable...feel sorry for those of you dialing that picture up on a phone line. You "Typhoon" looks just like other GT air filters...are you showing us the picture of the latest mod directly from K&N for the GT?
For those of you without cable...here's a smaller version...

I don't think the GT Typhoon from K&N is available yet. I may be wrong about this. Someone from K&N emailed me a couple weeks ago to tell me to keep my eyes open for the new intake which should be available in October.

Steve,
K&N used SteelBlueGT's car for the prototype. So the pic you see is the prototype. that's why it looks unpolished.

Honestly, I was expecting more from them. What makes this intake any different or better than all the others that look the same? There must be something that I can't see from the photo. It looks like they gave up on the "cold air" aspect that many other intakes have. WHat is your take on this?

yeah it doesn't look like much from k&n. It would have been nice to get a true CAI. I know steelblue stated why they didn't put in a heat shield but I can't remember off the top of my head what it was. I think having the CARB exemption will be a main factor especially for us here in CA.

The typhoon intake systems don't get the cold air box that the FIPK systems do. They are the lower cost aternative to the FIPK. I was hoping that the FIPK system was the one in question. I'd been waiting for them to release one.

does the filter element anchor anywhere or does it float over the stock wheel well opening?

![]() I didn't know this was a K&N prototype, Steel blue posted a reply on my Engine Performance - True Cold air Intake Post...Mine also makes great sound and the K&N plus the 3" PVC gives it power to spare! Question on your design, everything I've read says a tyfoon or twisting air doesn't do much good on the intake, where it needs it is on the out to create a larger volume. Your system is made of metal, isn't that a conductor of heat and what keeps the heat from the engine compartment from super heating the air going into the turbo? We all know about the heat problems in the engine compartment. I also have a real concern with your placement of the pcv hose going into the side of your intake as the turbo sucks air, isn't it also sucking oil into the turbo? I've seen how much oil come out of that hose without suction and can only imagine what the suction would do. My design is made from looking at systems like yours as well as metal box systems. That is how I came up with this design, plexiglass and PVC plastic (doesn't conduct heat)insulated with heating duct insulation from the filter to the turbo intake as well as the box itself. It is sealed at the top and sides so the only air allowed is from the fender and hood scoop, outside air. Quantity of air is important, but more important is QUALITY, the cooler the air going in the better the performance and the temp. difference between the engine compartment and the air box on mine IS signifigant! Also the pcv filter is inside the box and any oil is caught by the filter element, easily changed. I'm working on making mine purtier but I felt function came first. I can see how you can call yours a VOLUME air intake, but a cold air intake, no. Also I recommend you seriously consider fixing the pcv issue, hot oil can ruin a turbo! [8)]
