I read a recent engineering article on the latest performance filters(you might do a search for it). Point is Fram (all of them), purolator, wix, and number of O.E filters.... all trash and prone to break.

Good ones... Mobil One filter, K & N.

Buy a cheap filter...take your chances.
Kirby,
Please don't jump me,,,, I agree the Frams are junk, but Wix and Purolator are top quality, both in filter medium and quality of medium, I have had 2 Frams literally fall apart. But I have personally cut a number of filters apart, and WOULD HIGHLY recommend Wix and Purolator, Wix makes filters for a number of companies including Fleetguard. Purolator makes 2 filters, get the more expensive, those I have looked at, I can't speak for the cheaper line.
Tom
Kirby I just glanced through that link, he liked the Wix and Purolator if I read it right.[:I]

Mobil-1 Oil and Mobil-1 Filter, even if it is a few bucks more, it's worth it. But the Mobil-1 filters are only sold at Auto Zone.

Yea Kirby i just got through looking at that article and thats the one i was talking about. The guy just about says he doesn't know anything about what he's talking about. One thing he mentions in the "story"is a reference to a low end Wix and a high end Wix filter. From making filters for fifteen years for Wix thats a lie because all Wix filter no's are made to the same specs. They even make a few filters for Purolator.I'll tell you some of the brands they make are,CarQuest,Big A,Napa Gold and Silver,Texaco,Penske,Castrol.Make a lot of FL-1As for Ford.Make heavy duty oil and air for eighteen wheelers.Anybody can go out and getem an arm load of filters and cut em open, does that make them oil filter engineers. You have to make them and research the right people to form a conclusion.

DM,
Since you were in the filter industry, have you heard of the frams literally falling apart? I had two do it to me years ago, in less than a one year period, the cans seperated from the base and dropped down. The funniest part was they were on a SB chevy, so one landed perfectly and didn't tip over, I was parked on grass so that helped. The first time it happened, I thought someone took the filter off and set it under the jeep, when I looked at it I realised the base wasn't there, and saw it still on the bottom of the motor. I still thought someone was messing with me, the second time was in a locked garage. It was then I swore off frams. I have been a wrench most of my life, and had never heard of that, maybe a bad production run in which the crimp was bad. But when I got into a shop that the owner was buying different brand filters I started cutting them apart just because. Like my other post said, it is WIX, or Purolatorfor me,
Tom

Hey Kirby just what was the name of that oil filter study as I would like to read it a rebuke some of their opinions.First I am retired from Wix filters after fifteen years and I read an article on a forum where some guy who wasn't even a oil filter specialist cut open a bunch of filters and compared them.Wix,Napa which is made by Wix,Purolator,Mobil were rated some of the best filters. If you cut open a Fram which is truly junk you will see that their end caps that hold the filter media together is cardboard and the other filters have metal end caps instead of cardboard, icould go on and on but i don't consider myself an expert myself. But for my advice go with Wix,Purolator,(K&N,Amsoil if you want to pay more for the same protection).Wix has won Malcome Baldridge awards for many years for product quality.Oh yes i forgot to include Napa Gold as a top filter.

THier I'd be happy to respond to your question about Fram filters and the can coming loose from the end plate, they are joined together with a double seamer and if its not right, thats what happens. It should have been caught with the pressure test where they're put through a test six times the amount an engine exerts. But nowadays companys are hiring temporary employees who couldn't care less about what they are doing or reporting problems with quality. They are doing the same at Wix,with temp help and I'm afraid the quality is going to suffer as time goes on.I started to see that happen just before I retired.I hope they see the problem before its to late. But i still use them on my GT and Ford F 150 as i get air and oil filters for my cars for life free, even if i had to buy them i would go with Wix or Purolator anyway because they are very good filters.Amsoil,K&N,Champion filters may be just a little better but i don't think its worth the difference in price.Thats my two cents for today

The article is on page one of this thread. I am not sure, but I think that tharticle said much the same thing, but went further into how much Sq. Ft. of filter media and absolute strength of the case.

All of this filter stuff made me curious. Since I was changing the oil on my minivan, I took the oppurtunity to cut open the Fram filter that I took off of it. Of course I took pictures, and I must say that the filter looked good to me. Personally, I've never ever had a problem with a Fram, and I've been running them on everything that I've had starting with my 55 Chev 2 door.

Hey Kirby, thanks for sending me the pics of our Stage 1 upgrade day.
Now on subject, I read that study a year or so ago and that is the reason I use Purolator. I don't think you meant to include them in your junk list. They seemed to fare the best in the "cut-em-open" tests and measurments. I use the Pure 1.
