Macster,
I have been using Fram for 20 years or so. NEVER had a problem. That filter you hac..., I mean cut open looks good to me. No cardboard I could see. I use the next Fram up, it is gray with the black grip, in FL-1A Ford on my Harley. Ran strait Fram for 80,000 on my last truck(3614), no issues. I like em, will use it on my GT for sure, with Synth.

Hacked!!! I'll have you to know that the disassembly of that filter was carried IAW with 2003 Calif EPA provisions. It was done in the most scienctific conditions possible. In a clean room (garage no less). But in all seriousness, does the fact that I "hacked sawed" a Fram filter make me a guru or something on AFAS oil filters are concerned. The answer of course is "hell no," as far as I can tell the filter had done its job. Whether or not, it is as good as XXX doesn't mean squat to me. My points!!! are

1. Did the oil filter do what it was supposed to do?

2. Did I get what I paid for?

IMHO, I did. So the moral of the story so far is that people are having different experiences with the product. But I have used Frams on the following autos that I have own:
55 Chev
69 GTX
71 Vega (ugh)
74 260Z
77 Chevette (ughhh!!!)
92 Chevy Mini Van
84 Mazda 626
84 Honda DX
97 Plymouth Voyager

All were running good when I got rid of them, as a matter of fact the 626 has 200K miles on the original engine and is still running. The Plymouth Voyager has a 102K miles and is my daily transportation. So, I really can't bad mouth the product, it has worked for "me."

No but the next one meaning a Fram could in one installation undo what all the rest have done for you.Just like shootin craps the next time it might blow an engine.Far more odds are Frams are going to fail than other brands listed.Don't think i want a filter that has cardboard inside.

Laf i see the cut open filter and in the left hand corner i believe thats cardboard attached to an end cap and if you notice the inner metal tube has straight perforated rings where as a Wix has spiral rings which gives it more strength under higher pressures.

Dmmoore

RE" Far more odds are Frams are going to fail than other brands listed."

For the sake of discussion and because when I get off the computer I have to start stripping vinyl tile off the floor.
Do you have any facts that support your position? I have used the Frams since 1966, and I've yet to lose an engine. Can you substaniate your position? I'm no filter expert, and I don't care whats inside it as long as it does what it is suppose to. Are you old enough to remember that filter that used toliet paper? If memory serves me right, when ever you had to change the filter, you merely replaced the roll of toilet paper. Yet, people swore by those things. Ugggh.

peace

Yea macster i can verify the facts, number one the filter article if you read it word by word letter by letter it confirms what is known about Frams, they are not very good filters. And when you can buy two Frams for five dollars that tells you something else about Fram quality. And also i think i can speak about filter manufacturing as i made them for fifteen years at Wix,i ain't no engineer just a plain ole filter maker and made some very good filters while i was there(Ford,Napa,Carquest,Big A,yes even Purolator,GM,caterpillar, oil co filters.Yes i remember toilet paper in a can filters until Wix patented the spin on filter.Fram is still in my opinion and facts you can search on the web for are at the bottom of the list in quality.Look up Frams site and report back to the forum on how many Malcome Baldridge awards for product quality they have gotten over the years.

macster this is getting interesting, both sites i checked didn't give me any fresh thoughts on Fram. But i tell you what,i challenge you to go on the web and type in the search bar Fram complaints and then do the same thing with Wix complaints and let the forum know what you found out.I have enclosed a few i found.
William G. gives us the facts about that great Fram auto parts guarantee:
A short while ago I installed a Fram oil filter on my vehicle. Shortly thereafter I noticed a small amount of oil under my vehicle. It seems the filter had a small pin hole in it because of a factory defect in the outer case. I notified the company, Allied Signal Corporation, which told me to fill out a complaint form and return it to them. Which I did. Then they requested that I send the used filter to them by US Mail. This is impossible because the used filter is now considered hazardous waste. To return the filter using other means is too expensive and far outweighs the cost of the original filter. Any reputable company would have arranged for pickup of the defective part and checked it out. Their tactic is to discourage people from complaining to them or attempting to utilize there (so called) warranty. I still have the defective part just to remind me never to purchase Fram products or ANYTHING manufactured by ALLIED SIGNAL.

I stopped at a local automotive / marine machine shop to discuss - yet
again - composition of the Aqua Drive like drive system that is contemplated
for Mrs. Hudson .

We began swapping stories - somehow the topic of engine oil filters came up
...I told him about the oil filter of the Mercury diesel falling off last
year in France and he showed me a box of cut open Fram filters - and
Mercury filters - which are made by Fram.

The original oil filter had 8 ea of 1/4 in holes in the top of the
filter -- The New filter had 8 ea of 3/16 th inch holes which were blocked
by the check valve beneath reducing their effective size to only 3/32 inch .

One filter had metal flakes blocking the 3/32 inch holes which he
said were the bearings of the engine . He said that they have had several
new 454 engines last only
100 hrs . Fram said they would stand the cost of engine rebuild and
requested that the filters be sent back to them - which he said he could not
do as they were the property of the engine owners - who were contemplating a
class action lawsuit ..

Recalling that Fram threatened suit against the author of the Oil
Filter Study mentioned on the TWL some time ago -- I have no earthy opinion
worth offering - Draw your own conclusions !!

All the Best
Ken

I worked at an Autoparts store for about 2.5 years. In that time we sold Motorcraft, AC Delco, Lee and Fram. Guess which brand was the ONLY one we ever had complaints about? FRAM. People would come in saying that their filter collapsed from getting clogged, getting the engine ticking noise, Missing the rubber seal etc. I will NEVER use a Fram filter. I used to when I as a teen but learned my lesson after a VW I has started haveing a strong lifter tap on startup and for about 10 min of running. After a friend recomended swapping the filter the tick was gone! Glad I know better now though. Watch out for the quick change oil places. Some of them use Fram filters that are branded for their chain or brand of oil used.
Now look up Wix complaints on your internet search. And by the way the Malcome Baldridge award is a high ranking award given to all types of companys for making quality products.Look it up and become informed.Evidently you're not even reading some of your own sites that you want people to check on oil filters. But sometimes you just can't make people see the forest for the trees. My last comment about this is you get what you pay for it,you've just been lucky and buying cheap and flimsy made Frams. Please read all i have included in my post and do the search like i said. You will not find a complaint about Wix filters because i have done the research

Damn

That post was a long one. However, I'm not in to challenges. If, you noticed, the information that was contained in the posts on those sites, supports the common opinion that Fram filters are less than satisfactory.

I'm happy with the results that I've had and I made an effort to back up my beliefs by cutting a filter open myself to see what was inside. Now, I "know" what's inside the Fram filters that I've been buying and I don't have to wonder if someone is just putting pictures up on the internet to support their own agenda. Next I will cut open a XXXXX and take a look at it.

Human nature is a funny thing. Some people will NEVER believe it will happen to them, and some even in the throws, refuse to believe what is really happening. In those cases the laws of natural selection is the only believable teacher, then it turns to "why do I have all the bad luck".
