This is a topic that is so near and dear to people’s hearts that whole websites are devoted to it. The bottom line is that we are all speculating without running oil analysis. Whether you change it at 2,000miles or 10,000miles, all you’re getting is feel good, without actual analysis to support your conclusions.
Take a look at the ultimate oil, oil filter Website: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com You will find a ton of information on oils and filters and the actual testing to back up recommendations on their forum: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php
Happy reading. Make a search for the new German Castrol. You’ll be very intrigued….

Sooo

What was the best filter? That was just too much reading to get done on my lunch break.

Ilooked at it and i like what he's trying to do,but using a five gallon bucket with some type of gerry rigged engine mockup' i don't think its duplicating typical driving conditions, not every body drives and treats their car the same.I would say a good test for filters would be to install all brands of filters in a fleet of cabs in New York and put that data in a computer, put the same filters in racing cars on the Nascar circuit and put all that in the computer(of course cut open all filters and check)then put the results out there for the public to see and buy whatever they prefer.I hope and i believe he will come up with the right equipment and have the right test results.I wonder if Consumer Reports has done a full filter test, does anyone know.Plus anything he comes up with needs to be certified by the ASE.

Macster,
Next time when you cut a filter, cut around it not just in half, this way you can "lift out" the whole filter media. You basically want to remove the can. When I did mine I use a pair of shears to open the can. I gues it is misleading to say "cut it apart"[:0]
The truely bestthing Fram has going is their advertising.

Here is the correct way to cut open an oil filter. This way, you don't introduce metal from the case into the element.

For years, I did oil filter inspections on heavy equipment filters. We used a tool similar to this although larger.

This cutter is for sale for $80 here:

http://www.dealassoc.com/oil_filter_cutter.htm

Hope this helps all of you who like to look inside filters.

THere will be "no" next time. :-) Actually, it was kind of fun, I might hack open another, the next time. But as you can see it
did serve to provoke a good discussion. However someone else needs to open one up, and take a look. GT Steve has even started a new thread on the proper way to open up an oil filter. Man this is all good stuff.

Since you have done this before, why don't you open up a Fram and post the results? I went to your new thread and saw what appeared to be a Fram. But mine didn't have that thin cardboard piece, the end piece was much thicker about .125 inch.

Why don't I open a FRAM??? . . . Simple. I use K&N on my PT. Also, I am not in the "cutting open filters club." I was posting for those who like to look at EVERYTHING. Maybe someone from the club will do it for us. Since I retired four years ago, I no longer cut open filters.
