Question Time For Timing Belt

'03 PT GT with just over 90,000 miles. Guess I'll bite the bullet and have the timing belt replaced. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Gonna get a couple of estimates before I pull the trigger so I want to be sure I'm covering everything when I start calling around.

Replace:
Timing belt
Tensioner? Being an '03, does my PT already have the upgraded tensioner?
Water pump
Serpentine belts

Anything else I should replace while the engine is being worked on?

Pros and cons for dealer vs independent mechanic to do the work?
Thanks!
Bill

I'd replace the tensioner - price it.
As to mechanic vs dealer - usually the mechanic is cheaper - I'd find one who's done one before on a PT.

My PT is exhibiting a small leak (coolant)on the same side as the belt. They tell me it is a 9 hour job. Drop engine, remove covers, good time to change the timing belt and they suspect but cannot guarantee that it is the water pump.

What are the odds it is the head?

They are talking in the vicinity of $1,100.00 to do this job and replace the timing belt and water pump. Based on what you have written looks like I should ask for a tensioner as well?
Tough to swallow that much investment in a car that would net maybe 4 times that if I sold it.

Car has 128,000km on it or about 79,500 mi

Well... its only partly an investment... the other part is maintenance payback for 79k usage.

Im sending mine in next week it has 91,000 on it its a 2006 auto and im having the

water pump

timing belt

tensioner

if there is a serpentine belt

coolant flushed and filled

and a new exhaust---just a muffler and tail pipe

the dealer was at $1375 minus the exhaust

Local shop ( the owner used to be the lead mech at the Chrysler dealership) said including the exhaust they do it for $900

books at right at 7 hours labor

they have done several PT's and he said quite a few neons so im hooing hes up for it

I hate to pay that but im not going to attempt it so in she goes

I just hit 82,000. I plan to schedule mine at around 90,000 - when it is warmer. I'm going to have wheel bearing and bushings looked at and replaced (polyurethane for busings) is needed.
All at mechanic I've been going to for 20+ years. I expect to leave it several days.
