Default How important is premium?

I am looking at getting a GT. How important is premium fuel? Is it really going to hurt anything if I run 87 or 89?

I consider it to be very important. While the book may say you can run 87 that is only when you absolutely can not find premium at the moment. While the pcm is supposed to pull timing and cut power I've seen regular run in a GT and have seen the numbers on a scan gauge. There is still some engine knock that the pcm can't control Eventually, over time, if you continually run 87 then there will be damage. I always ask a person why would they buy a GT if they can't afford the premium fuel and use the whole benifit of all of the power of a turo'd car? If you want to burn 87 and want a turbo then get the 180 hp turbo that is programmed to use 87.

I've tried several tanks of premium with no noticeable difference, so I've stayed with regular.

garner,

You signature says you have a Turbo Lite. Your supposed to run regular gas and YES, premium will make no difference in yours. Carman asked about running premium in a GT.

I just installed the S1 on a turbo lite and it had a full tank of regular. I got 20mpg on half a tank. I then topped up with premium and got 21.5 mpg. Now on a full tank of premium I'm getting 22mpg, so 10% increase in gas price = 10% increase in MPG, and I don't have to worry about detonation. I can't say I felt any change in performance however.
