Brad,

Read this:

COP TZR,
TSB# 18-029-03
Date: August 8, 2003

SUBJECT: Slight Engine Mis-Fire Above 5200 rpm

OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves replacing the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

MODELS: 2003 (PT) Chrysler PT Cruiser

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built prior to January 22, 2003 (MDH0122xx) equipped with a 2.4L Turbo engine and manual transmission or prior to March 18, 2003 (MDH 0318xx) for vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Turbo engine and automatic transmission.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION: Vehicle operator may describe a random or slight engine mis-fire when operating vehicle above 5200 rpm. There will be no DTC logged in the PCM. If there are DTC’s present additional diagnosis should be done to determine the problem. This condition is caused by a internal hardware issue in the PCM.

OK, so it loks like mine falls into this range. But I am NOT having the miss/stumble. Anyone else have a car that is covered by the TSB but NOT having the symptoms? Should I take it in anyone, since others are reporting the new PCM improves performance beyond fixing the high RPM miss?

Brad:
In my opinion, you should take your car in for the new PCM. The part is covered by your warranty so there is no cost to you. I believe that you will notice a big change in the way your car runs after you have the PCM changed.

You may be worried about having to prove to your dealer that you are having a problem. Is that a concern? For me, the high RPM miss was intermitant and only happened on those rare occasions that I went WOT. You may be an easy driver like me. For the average driver, they may never notice the miss or not even know that it is happening. It is more like a stumble than a noticable miss.

I believe that EVERYONE who has a car that is covered by this TSB should get a new PCM. The drivablility improvements alone make it worthwhile.

I received the invoice today for the new PCM. Of course, it didn't cost me anything since it was covered by the warranty. The cost of the PCM is listed as $434. Glad I didn't have to pay.

bob,

It's on the white sticker on the driver's door. Look for "MMDDHH xxyyzz". That will give you Month, Day & Hour of manufacture. The month & year are shown as MM/YYYY on the same sticker.

Just called my Dealer, quoted the TSB #, he will order the PCM and call me when it comes in, so far so good.

Just had my new PCM installed today. It was a nice surprise as it was not due until next week.

Had to go to Niagara Falls today on business so I had a chance to open it up. I would have to agree with everyone here the new PCM is worth the trouble even if you are not experiencing the high RPM miss. The shifts are so much smoother on the A/S now. Also the car is pulling like a champ through the gears.

How much of this is "learning mode" though? will the performance fall off once the learning mode ends?? Or does it not apply here?

I'll try calling my dealer again now that I have the TSB number.

I've been driving with the new PCM since early September and haven't noticed any drop off in performance. I would say the 200 mile learning period doesn't apply.
