Default Engine question

Do you have to disassemble the engine to get to the camp shaft and the cylinder head? The shop is finally trying to figure out why we are having the #4 misfire. I guess it was only carrying 100 something of compression.

That's a lot of work....
If they are taking the head off, might as well have timing belt changed (and water pump) since the belt has to come off, and that's a ton of labor...
Belt, water pump, tensioner & pulley are about $130 + shipping - labor is a lat more than that....
the serpentine belt also has to come off, so you might do that for cost of the belt, too.....

I would suggest that they do a leakdown test. If you only have 100 #s of compression it is escaping somewhere and they may be able to pinpoint the problem before they tear down. If one of the valves are leaking they may be able to hear it in the intake or exhaust manifold depending which it is. If the rings are bad they won't be able to hear it but you would have been blowing smoke out the tailpipe. The reason I am suggesting this is if it is valves, removing the head (including cams, yes) and putting on a rebuilt would likely be cheaper than a whole engine. If the rings are bad you need an engine so no need to tear down the old one. Another leak could be a cross threaded spark plug. If it is leaking here they would see it on the plug and I assume they didn't in their previous search.

I am hoping this is a shop you can trust.
