Default Turbo VIN Code

Does anyone know what the different VIN codes mean for the 2005 Turbo engines? I know that the 2003 VIN is G, but the 2005 has 4 different ones: 8,E,G,S. Are there any differences between these motors? Thanks

G is always the "High Output" engine.
The other three are for the "turbo lite" engines, and I think the convertibles might have had a different engine code for the "lites" because they had slightly more power, but i'm not sure about that.

That's not entirely accurate. That's true up to 2006. Depending on the year you're talking about, you have to use the 6th digit. 2006 GT is "7". Lite is most likely "6". '06 was the last year for 230hp. Regardless of body style, the sixth digit tells all. I believe every turbo afterwards was "6" since 180hp was all that was offered after 2006.

I have a post for anyone looking to turn their 2006-2009 into a GT 230hp. Search 2008 GT-R.

Wow, thanks for that extra tip, i was going nuts trying to distinguish the 4 . I was looking at a 2005 with leather and 5 speed , was in slight accident, fixable , but i could not tell the 2.4 turbo on the back if it said high output underneath. And in the vin on the 8th i got s..... And the 6th was 7 ! Yey

I don't think the turbo lite ever came with a 5 speed. To my knowledge, if it's got a turbo and a 5-speed, then it's a GT.

Well, you're on the right track but you got on the wrong train.
The first year for the 'vert got the composite intake manifold while the hard top still had the original aluminum intake, but the advertised HP ratings were the same. The following year, when the hard tops also got the new style composite intake, the advertised HP rating was raised a tad for both. (I really doubt that there were any real world power differences between the early "advertised" rating and the later number. It was just another marketing shell game.)

True 'dat. The engines and turbos were identical and unchanged for both the GT and Lite for the full run of all years. Only the boost level/tune was different between the GT and Lite.

Don't go by what the emblem says. Anybody can add or subtract the "High Output" sticky and they often did. Look for the other equipment as explained below. All GT's ever made were automatically "High Outputs", even the '03 gt which didn't have the little sticky because there were no Lites that year and thus no low outputs.

That is correct, Sir.
The Turbo Lites also didn't get the GT 140mph speedo, the GT "Autostick" shifter, the 17" GT wheels and the bigger GT 4-wheel disk brake package. However the "big" 4-wheel disks were available as an optional upgrade on the Lite for a couple of years. I believe there were no 17" factory wheel upgrades for the Lites but I could be incorrect on that point.

I have a 2004 GT H/O and the sixth digit is a 7,Silver Metallic ,with black leather ,heated seat W/AUTO STICK ,140 MPH Speedo,4 wheel disc and 17''GT WHEELS + chrome accents and rear spoiler. My insurer classifies it as a dream cruiser, although it is solid Silver Metallic.
