Howling, gurgling, & popping when I accelerate? Help!

Saturday morning my '03 GT started howling when I accelerate By the time I got home (a 30 mile trip) the howling stopped but now I am hearing popping and gurgling when I accelerate. Is my turbo shot? Tips? Advice? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Just had a chance to get under the hood and look around. The air intake hose completely rotted away from the turbo. So, anyone have an idea of what an OEM air intake hose costs from the dealer? Guess the repair will have to wait till tomorrow.

First thought was wheel bearing, but they don't gurgle.

I knew it wasn't the wheel bearings. I've changed those and know what that sounds like. More of a hum than a "howl". Besides, my car was howling when parked, no whels were turning yet I still had the noise.

The air intake duct (on the 2.4L Turbo) has a rubber elbow on the bottom of the duct that hooks to the turbo charger. That rubber was dry rotted and just broke away. The howl was most likely the air being sucked through a hole. Eventually the howl stopped, I'm assuming when the hose completely fell off, and that's when I started hearing the popping and the "gurgle".

Going to pick the replaceement paty at the dealer during lunch. A $79.00 fix. Not too bad, let's hope that's the only problem.

Hope that turbo didn't suck in any of that hose. You need to pull your intake manifold off and make sure it's clean and has not debris in it. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the tip Chromenut. I thought of that and the hose and the section still clamped to the turbo matched up perfectly. Doesn't look like any pieces came off. But I will take off the intake manifold and look for debris. Any other suggstions? I drove about 12 miles after the hose came off (when the howling stopped) so I will look for anything (dirt, crud, foregn material) that may have found it's way in.

Well I'm not so lucky. The turbo is shot. There is some dirt inside the intake housing and there is a lot of play on the wheel, though Chris from TU said that is a good thing. Since it's still there that means it didn't get sucked through the manifold.

However, I get a smoke show when I start it and go over 20mph. Smells real nice too, almost like ozone...my GOD I hope it's only oil burning.

I talk to Chris at Turbos Unleashed today for about 30 minutes. He set my mind at ease, gave it to me in term I could understand, and was VERY patient with me. His customer service is outstanding and if his parts are half as good as his customer service...I will not have a problem with my new turbo! Now the wait for the parts...
