Default Got a problem

Hello all,
I have a 2003 GT that is now in the shop. Was driving and when I accelerated heard a sound like a cat crying or wind outside blowing around your house. The sound is only there when pushing the accelerator and sounds like its coming from the engine. When I stopped at the next stoplight thick white smoke came out of my exhaust like somebody popped a smoke grenade. Then it stopped. I drove straight to the shop and they've had it since. Any ideas on what it might be? Thanks so much.

"Thick white smoke out of the exhaust" sounds like a blown head gasket. Not as bad as it sounds but the top half of the engine has to come off. Hopefully the shop is someone you know and can trust.

If they've gotta replace the headgasket you might as well have the water pump and timing set done while they are in there... if you haven't already.

No, you don't have the ultra rare James Bond 007 PT Cruiser Edition. A compression test would confirm the headgasket failure. Intermittent smoke and strange sound usually indicate a turbo failure though. We can help you if that's what it turns out to be. Take a look at our PT Cruiser Turbo User's Guide at the link below.

Thanks Chris. That's why I said "sounds like a blown head gasket". He's taken it to a shop and hopefully they will confirm exactly what it is.

No problem. Hopefully it's the least expensive one between the two.

I think this message board needs a list of repair facilities across the nation that know these cars. Too many mechanics are learning while working on these cars and this costs the customers additional $. Who should we talk to about starting that list on this message board?

Chris,

You've only been here since the beginning of the year and look what you've seen. Those of us that have been around awhile have seen the worst possible scenarios where private shop mechanics and dealer mechanics throw parts at a problem like the car owner had an open bank account. From a small sensor to the PCM to tearing apart the bottom end and when the problem doesn't go away, they just try something else like, Ho Hum, that didn't work, let's try something else and Oh Yea, you have to pay for it anyway.

It's amazing what owners tell us when they come to the forum.

Yes.. Chris is right... the cat or wind noise when he push it means something worse like a bad turbo shaft hitting the housing... damn... I hope you dont need to spend too much money...but if its the turbo Chris at Turbos Unleash is the way to go.

I had this happen to my old Lebaron GTS. The seal blew in the turbo. Started whining loud as a jet plane... always got the attention in my school parking lot lol... then sitting at a gas station while idling, white smoke cloud behind the car.
