Default Turbo problems...help!

04 PT Cruiser Turbo (non-GT), 119,000 miles the old turbo went out, sounded like a dying cat under the hood. I bought a brand new turbo cartridge and had a local shop install it. The car ran great for all of two hours, then while at wide open throttle I here a pop. Turbo isn't working again, there's no dying cat sound just an intermitent clunk. I took it back to the shop and they're perplexed. The haven't gone back in there to look at everything, I think maybe they didn't tighten a seal or gasket? The shop of course is trying to say it's something else, but what else could it be? I'm thinking faulty install but could there be another issue that hasn't been addressed. Interestingly enough the old turbo went out under wide open throttle as well, I don't know if there's a correlation there.
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. Thanks.

What did they first cartridge look like? Was it free spinning or locked up? Also, did you use the old housing? Did you/they check for cracks? Did you/they check the wastegate or flapper inside they exhaust mani? Boost leak check?

the first cartridge was free spinning not locked up. I did use the old housing, I don't believe they checked for leaks. They replaced the exhaust manifold gasket but that's it. This isn't a place that specializes in turbos so I think they just replaced the cartridge and that was it. I'm trying to find a place in LA that knows more about turbos though. So you think there could be a leak in the housing? But wouldn't the turbo not work if that were the case? I think a boost leak check would be in order too.

If the first cartridge wasn't locked up, and no shaft play, then it wasn't a faulty cartridge. The exhaust gasket wouldn't cause the turbo problems. If the housing is cracked it can't build pressure. And if you have boost leaks, the pressure is all out gone. Well, the majority of it. Sounds more like the wastegate sticking open to me.

well when the first turbo went, it was really loud, then sounded like rocks being shaken in a tin can. I talked to the shop, they're saying it's a defective cartridge. They also said there were no visible cracks/leaks in the housing. When the turbo went last night there was no sound per se, just no boost at all and an intermitent cluck at idle from the turbo. Where is the wastegate located on the car? I'll tell them to check that

If you heard rocks, then can you take pics if the wheels that are attched to the turbo from the old cartridge? Are the fins broke? If they are, there's a good chance your housing is scared and may hit the cartridge fins and cause damage. The wastegate is mounted to the turbo housing and has a rod connected to the flapper on the exhaust manifold. The turbo builds pressure inside the engine until a specific psi when the wastage actuator releases that pressure thru the exhaust. Do a google search for stock PT cruiser wastegate. Plenty of pics on the Internet.

For sure, check the oil feed line to the turbo. A real bitch to get off, but you may find it clogged. Alternate is to disconnect the line at the Turbo, and give it a crank over with a can to catch the oil. Just takes a few seconds if that. No oil, it's the oil line.
Cheap and quick check.

the oil lines should have been changed with the turbo, if you haven't done it yet do it now before you blow this turbo.
