Default Heavy Smoking...

Ok guys i need some input here. I accquired a 2004 factory turbo cruiser that is smoking heavily. It does this the enitre time its running and gets worse under load. I have done research and it sounds like the turbo is bad. what i am wandering is if i can bypass the turbo, put a N/A manifold and downpipe on it and drive it like normal? Also if anyone has any ideas on other possible problems please let me know.

Turbocharged engines have a much lower compression ratio then non-turbocharged versions. Removing the turbocharger set up would only lead to driveability issues due to the difference in engine electronics. Let's try to verify if the turbocharger is the issue first. Are you experiencing smoke at cold start up also or does it take a while for the smoke to appear when you start the car first thing in the morning?

Call around for a rebuilder, it may cost more to convert it than rebuild.

first pull plugs and see if there's oil on them. You can also remove oil cap and see if theres massive blowby. A compression check might tell.
For Neon guys, this would be a classic broken piston due to detonation.

IF a turbocharged engine detonates, it will break pistons.

Changing the piston isn't that expensive or difficult. Ask what flat rate is.

Obviously, this could be the turbo oil feed as well,

After completing a little research we determined the Chrysler 2.4 litre turbo engine has a compression ratio of 8.1:1 and the non-turbo version around 9.5:1.

It's not just the difference in compression ratio that's important though. It's mainly the ECU which controls the fuel, spark and timing curve. The camshaft profiles are also designed differently then non-turbo versions.
