Default Hiss sound on turbo

Hello everyone,

I hear a hiss sound on my 2003 GT when I use the turbo. Sounds like an air leak or something and the turbo has lost a bit of performance.

My mechanic told me that the turbo is about to fail and he describes the sound as "the turbo is snoring". He recommended me to sell the car to avoid paying the repair... what do you think?

For around $300 or less you can get a remanufactured turbo, with a1 to 2 year warranty. With the purchase of a new oil line. Find someone who has some experance with a turbo to look at it.

I'm 75% sure it is just a boost leak. All the hoses, hose connections and hose clamps that are exposed to boost need to be inspected for cracks or loosness. This is a VERY common issue and takes a bit of time but usually no money to track down and fix.

If you're not sure what to do, maybe there's a fellow owner close by that has messed around with boost enough to help you find the leak. There are good mechanics and then there are good turbo mechanics. They are not the same thing. If your mechanic doesn't work on turbo systems on a regular basis, preferably ones that are modified, he doesn't have the experience to make a judgment like that.

agreed.

Also check the gaskets on each end where it bolts up. Sometimes the heat created in the turbo can crack one. Cheap and simple reapir.

a "snoring turbo" is a turbo that sounds like a 18wheeler downshifting on steep hill. sounds kind of like you dis connected your muffler, yet quieter. Get a new mechanic lol

Some good reading even though it may not apply to you. The mileage of you car would be helpful also.

Just click on the pictures and when you have read all of this you will have a better understanding of turbos. No mater what your skill level, you will be armed with more info if you resurch the subject.

Agree with others - sounds more like a leak than the turbo going.

Thank you all for the answers.
My PT is 163K miles.

My mechanic is a good one but he's not turbo specialist. I think I will look for one.

I am 90% sure that it's a leak because of the sound and definitely my PT doesn't sound like a 18wheeler
