Default how do I tell. gear reduction starter or not

I have an 03 gt turbo and am trying to order a starter. They already have my core but it looked lik a regular starter to me. Anyway they are asking me when I order if I have magnetic gear reduction or not. Chrysler has no idea. Go figure. How would I tell ?

when people ask you stupid questions about stuff like that, you're usually better off buying elsewhere.

to me, a starter is one of those things its always better to buy locally.
if you ever need to warranty it you can just go exchange it easily.

yeah that's pretty local(sorry)

i see your problem. can you just make them match it up with the one you brought as a core, or is it already long gone?

seems if you pick the wrong one you'll be like this guy:
>>
Installed in car, hit the key and it spun but did not engage. Can't tell if the solenoid did not engage or it did not fit correctly. Slight size difference between manufacturers part.
<<
that review is from advance auto listing for 2003GT. that starter is labeled "Mitsubishi Permanent Magnet Direct Drive"

the one with gear reduction has no complaints.

-----

for my 2002NA there is only one option, so i can't be more help.
i do know that MY car uses the permanent drive starter and that is the only option for my car on orielly, advance, and autozone sites. that's a crappy problem man. hope you get it sorted.

On the 2003 PT GT, it appears all the major parts stores show both the Mechanical Reduction and the Permanent Magnet Direct Drive starters. The price of the starter is usually the same but the core for the Permanent Magnet Direct Drive starter is often around $50 while the regular starter core is only $10.

They need to find your old starter and check the original number on the starter. According the photos online, the two starters look the same.

PS: All 2001 PT's have a Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction starter.

It would appear that all PT starters are the same from 2003+
I'm not positive that turbo makes a difference
I'm not positive that Gen1 or Gen2 makes a difference

They are all:
Voltage (V): 12 Volt
kW Rating (kW): 1.2kW
Design: Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction
Rotation Direction: Clockwise
Number Of Pinion Teeth: 9
Spade S term.

From the '04 Parts Catalog:

From the '06 Parts Catalog:

From the '08 Parts Catalog:

There are different part #'s for the NA and Turbo, so there must be some differences.

Thank you Rick

I did notice the different part numbers too.

A few minutes ago I noticed some are 8 gear and some are 9 gear.
That would make a huge difference.
