Cool Turbo Whistle/Whine - Part II

This is a follow up to some questions I had asked here, and on the "Crew" site.
I had always had a whistle/or whine when the turbo kicks in on the 2005 Dream, Cruiser Vert.
I am probably resigned to the fact that one of these days, the turbo will need rebuilt. So, I'll just go easy in the time being.

WHAT I DID FIND TODAY:
So after hearing some of the thoughts by you techies, today I was doing a few things for my gal, and I went ahead and pulled the hose from the air box to the turbo.
-There seemed to be some burnt oil residue at the turbo fitting end.
DANG! I should have started the car and listened to the sound then! It wasn't all that bad a job....but I gain more respect for you wrenchers every time I try to do thing DIY!
-Everything looked fine, except the hose at the air box end; where someone probably just strong-armed the hose on without any lubrication!
Here's a picture of the rubber folded over....where it obviously wasn't sealed very well.

I used a small Blazer butane torch that I had left over from some dental lab work....softened the rubber, and molded it back outwards wearing a heavy leather glove. Looked and went back on just fine!

But, alas, I drove her around a while, and there was no difference in the high pitched whine, that varies depending on amount to boost applied.

So...that's why I think it's just turbo/bearing wear.

Hey Doc you don't really have bearings in the Turbo but bushings. You can check for shaft bushing (that bearing thing) clearance by removing the inlet hose so you can reach into the Turbo inlet housing and touching the Turbine wheel. It should spin freely and have no side movement.

Naturally the best way is completely removing the Turbochrager for inspection.

"When the turbo kicks in" Meaning you are going wide open throttle? That whine is normal. I got it too and every SRT-4 owner I knew that had a stock turbo had that noise. If its the same noise. A tiny bit of side to side play is normal. Now if you try to pull the compressor wheel out by grabbing the center there should be no play.

Having oil on the that tube is normal, it is just blow by from the crankcase vent house that leads to the factory intake. Getting a catch can between those 2 lines will help that. You don't want to get oil caked on your compressor wheel.

As said above a little side play is normal. Make sure it's cold. Dont reach in there while things are still hot. Make sure you can't make the impeller touch the side of the housing. If it does you need bushings.
