Default GT went BOOM after being parked...

Today is my day off and for a change it is nice and sunny over here in Sauerkrautcountry!

So I dropped the kid off at kindergarten and parked PT with the hood pointing into the garage and did some work on the stone-chipping of the front bumper.

After 20 to 30 minutes I took a short break to relax the old bones and sat in the car when suddenly there was a loud BOOM!
First I thought something had fallen down in the garage but when I looked under the hood I saw that the engine hood insulation mat was torn apart (picture Motororraum_1).

Right under it seems to be a pressure valve (picture Motorraum_2).

Now, before I parked the car I only travelled a short distance into town, may be 2 miles, no traffic jam, no speeding, no overheating and the car had already been parked for minimum 20 minutes.

Why that loud boom?
Do I need to check anything?

The wife would need the car tomorrow but I am reluctant to hand her the keys before I know whether it is something serious or not...

Those among you with a more technical mind than poor simple me, please advice!

From those pics, I don't see anything wrong.
Have you started the car to see if anything thing is leaking...vacuum hoses maybe.

Agree.

Nothing that ought to "boom".

Start it with hood open, then drive it.

The only things that still have any pressure on them is radiator and ac. The first is ruled out for the pictures as is the second. No water or oily residue in that area. Look under the vehicle for anything puddled. Your first instinct may be correct in thing it was something else besides the PT. You don't have any propane system do you? Could blow a line off and make that boom. Just grasping at straws on that one.

I've experienced the Cruise Control still have Vacuum after the car sat for many days, But that has nothing to do with this current problem, just adding another thing that still has pressure, be it Negative :-P

the only time i saw a hood heat mat with damage was when we sprayed waaaay too much nitrous at waaaaay too low of an RPM. our little mishap blew every vacuum line off the engine. where the intake tube attached to the throttle body is where our hood insulation looked like yours, and yours is in the same spot.

i would remove that tube and inspect it, as well as the lines around it. while it is off, you should also inspect the throttlebody blade, particularly the shaft it's screwed to. I've seen two(not in PT's) break that shaft from a backfire. inspect it front and back for cracks, particularly where the screws go through it.

my NON turbo PT backfired once, and it was caused by a piece of the stock airbox breaking off and hanging an intake valve open. here's a new one you have a turbo though, so i have no clue if something similar could happen to yours. if you you're mechanically inclined to do so, you might consider removing the upper intake and looking in it, and also down in the lower, for any sort of debris that could have caused yours to do this.

I checked all the tubes and took the car for a test drive.
Nothing!
Everything seems to be pretty normal.

I am 100% sure nothing fell down in my garage, so the noise must have been coming from somewhere in the neighbourhood.

The torn insulation mat seems to have put me on the wrong track... (I still wonder why it is torn but as nothing more serious seems to be broken I can happily ignore that).

Thank you all for your input!

It's hard to tell from that pic, but it looks like a little bump there..meaning that it where the washer squirter is located. It could have been torn very easily by someone trying to replace them...or maybe it's leaking.

Perhaps a giant cow fart in a nearby field? An alien spacecraft just entering the earth's atmosphere, causing a sonic 'boom'? The possibilities are endless....
