Default Going to take a look at buying an '04 Turbo

Are there any things that I should be checking out other than the usual control arm bushings, etc?

It will be my wife's PT for back and forth to work, and might end up being my winter rat (hate to say that).

My list would not be complete by far. But here's some stuff I'd look at specific to a PT:

* Check coolant bottle for signs of staining due to overheating.
* Ask if timing belt has been changed. Look for signs that it happened. Sadly, signs are most apparent if work was sloppy (missing bolts in cover, cracked cover, wrong bolts, etc..)
* Are the leather seats in good condition?
* Bounce the corners of the car up and down to check for squeaks and bad shocks.
* Look under PT as well as you can for signs of rust, rock pecks and other derogation.
* Take car for long drive, then park some where secluded and listen closely to the engine. Does it miss at idle after thoroughly warmed up? Is there clatter from the timing components? Does the coolant stay cool at idle?
* Is the transmission fluid red or burnt brown?
* Does it shift well under heavy load.
* Crank the radio loud, do the speakers sound blown?
* Cycle the sunroof four or five times. Does it operate smoothly. Does the vent position work right? Do the plastic arms that hold the roof up in vent position look worn?
* What does the underside of the front bumper cover look like? It is fairly nice or beat to pieces?
* Is the bottom cross member under the radiator bent?
* Is the inner cooler bent or damaged?
* Are the turbo air pipes below the engine bent, damaged or corroded?
* Is the steel water X-pipe on the left side of the engine badly corroded? These often corrode and eventually leak on turbo engines.
* Do the fog lights work? If not, check to see if fuse is pulled. MFS is likely bad if so.
* Does the PT have both gray keys? Does it come with at least one working fob?
* Is the carpet in good condition back in the cargo area.
* Does it have the original GT floor mats?
* Are the GT chrome wheels flaking?
* Is there water in the rear tail lights?
* Are the headlights hazy?

Can't add to the list from our friend of the great sovereign state of Arkansas!

The Turbo is strong, fast and reliable.. People that don't understand the love of a PT, probably don't deserve to.

Do the heated front seats work?
Does it have a spare under the rear and the jack and handle in the bag behind the hatch on the passenger side rear?
Does it have the package shelf behind the rear seats?
How about the storage box under the passenger front seat?
Owners manual?
If automatic, does it have The Auto-Stick option? Does it work well?
I'm assuming this a GT full power 220hp car, not a Turbo-lite 185hp Touring.

WOW! What a great list of things to check!!

I printed the lists out and will bring with me.

I do know that it is in the care of a "Mopar Guy" who has a Charger and a RAM.

It is also a Limited Edition, which I assume means it is the "Turbo Lite" version.

Oh..

If he has both a Charger AND a Ram, then that's a man of high refinement and discerning tastes. I know any other car he has will be one fine ride.

Yep, I knew you would say that Handy!

It's interesting but you guys didn't mention the control arm bushings problem that Cruisers are known for. That's what my son told me to look for, along with the usual rusted out body panels and brake lines from being driven in winter. He replaced his '02s bushings by himself last year.

OK, so I took a look at that Cruiser. Turns out it's a Platinum Edition, 6 CD changer, and Sirius radio. Chrome door spears, etc, etc. I am sure you guys know all about that stuff. Aside from the normal rusty body panels, it's not in that bad of shape for an Upstate New York car. The headlights are crystal clear, and the engine compartment seems good. Oil is good. Coolant was low in the bottle, but looked OK at the radiator neck. Underneath there are two smaller lines that run just under the 'turbo air pipes ??' that looked a bit damp. Are those the transmission cooler lines??

Engine started and ran like a top. Smoother than my NA engine. Warmed right up. Plenty of heat and A/C was very cold.

Interior just needs some good cleaning on the driver's side. The rest looks fine. Everything works.

I took it for a spin. First time driving an automatic, and first time with a turbo. Ohhhh Yeahhhhh! Zoom, zoom!!

I tried to check everything on your lists. My son and I are going for a second look tomorrow night.

It definitely needs brakes. He has two sets of rims. The snow tires are on it now. The chrome rims have brand new summer tires on them.

It was his mom's car. She is 80 years old and bought a newer KIA Soul as her new car.

$2000. Not that bad of a price.

Sounds nice. Those lines running under the car may be the oil cooler lines. There is a little sandwich oil cooler on the oil filter adapter. I think those lines run coolant to the cooler and they can get pretty crusty. They are on my to-do list to replace, but I think they are around item #44.

They could also be tranny cooler lines, but I don't have an auto so I wouldn't know how those run. FYI, most of the youtube vids on changing radiators involve surprise that the tranny cooler is not in the radiator, but external.

Good luck

My son and I are going to look at it again tonight.

I'll get his opinion on the rust. I'm used to seeing it, and it doesn't scare me. As long as the frame looks good, that is pretty normal for up here.

Plus, looking again I can really look at details I may have missed.

If I buy it, it will be my wife's car in summer and my winter rat.

Thanks for the tips!!
