Default Is the turbo engine non-interference?

Just bought an '04 Platinum Series with the 2.4 l Turbo 'lite' as they say. 62,400 miles on the clock.

Is it a non-interference engine? Should I have the timing belt done?

Congrats on buying the turbo!

Yes the valves in the turbo PT head will not hit the pistons under normal conditions should the timing belt break. However, under specific conditions, the intake and exhaust valves have been reported to hit one another. The same reports have been made for the NA engine. But both reports are pretty rare.

At 62,400 miles, the belt is not due a change. However, some folks believe age is just as important as mileage. I ran my 2005 GT right up to 100K miles before doing the timing belt. And I wasn't worried. If I had bought your PT, I'd likely do the same. But everyone's tolerance for risk is different.

And again, congratulations on the Platinum Series!

How much do you drive? It it were me, I'd have it done, then figure I'd be good for 100,000 miles.
You should have the auto trans flushed - and only with ATF + 4. (Every 50,000 miles).

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. Might do the transmission, and yep I only use ATF +4.

My son has an '02 and he was worried about the timing belt, and last summer on the way to his vacation it let go.

However it had 109k on it, so I think I am going to wait it out a while. This Cruiser will be for transporting my Mother-In-Law around (who just turned 95 on May 2) because it's way easier for her to get in and out of than my Dodge Stratus. My son is of the opinion that since we live 'up north' there is not as much chance for dry rot either, like the south or south west.

Also, it will be my Winter Rat since my '06 is in like-new condition.

Are you sure that Platinum car is a Turbo-lite?
I was under the impression they were based on GT which is 220 HP not 185 HP.
The Platinum Car I drove certainly was not a Turbo-lite!

Bubba, what is the real story?🙂

Yes. I've stripped parts off two of them. Grabbed some badges just two weeks ago. They are turbo lites. I'm 100% sure.

However, these babies are only a PCM upgrade away from full GT power.

Of course, that must have been the case with the Plat that my son and I drove before he bought his 03 GT. That Plat set us back in our seats and made us want more!

It's very easy for us car enthusiasts to get obsessed with horsepower. I've always followed my daddy's old saying that, "If you look fast, you don't really need to be fast". But even I get caught up in wanting more. However, the reality is that 180 hp is a nice amount of power for a PT Cruiser. It's more than a 350 small block Chevy from back in the day. And the turbo lites that I've had the privilege to drive had plenty of power for fun sporty street driving.

The horsepower in a GT and beyond is just more icing on cake in my opinion. And for folks that don't competitively race, the main purpose of it is just to be able to brag here on the forum and/or to brag to a very few friends that actually care about such things. In my opinion, a turbo lite has plenty of suck-you-back-in-the-seat power as it is. I don't think that's said enough.

Of course, we are car enthusiasts. So all bets are off.

Good "read" response Todd^^^^^

FWIW..... I run less than 225 at the wheel (slightly engine enhanced 05 GT ATX) and can say that my PT Cruiser is very "quick" when I compare to records of 1/4 mile runs reported over the years.(see 2 threads on forum PT Crew with members 1/4 times and speeds) Having Dyno'd about 6 Pt Cruiser in different modded stages now in the last few years nothing is as it seems if the DYNO are set up correctly before a run. This is also true with every vehicle. If you get all wound up in the HP game you will lose point of owning a PT Cruiser. Remember most all the reports and advertised HP figures are under either controlled, or exaggerated conditions. Also they are at the upper RPM (engine speed) limits. Very few of PT Cruiser owners run at those levels very often.

**Hmmm.....ok Todd aka Handy_Cruiser I am older than you this is easy to see because back in my day which was pre 80's we did have lots of HP in our sm.CH. V-8's.
