Question Upper intake questions

Developed a leak at the upper intake gasket. Will be replacing it this weekend. I noticed on post on this subject, it seems to be a weak point. Any advantages to adding Blue RTV around the ports, or just install gasket as is? Thanks.

Personally, I don't recommend any type of gasket sealer, but I'm NOT an ASE Mechanic. There are two guys on here that are, so let's see what they say. My logic is that if it didn't come from the factory that way, then there's a reason. One less foreign object to be sucked into the engine if too much is used.

Not one of the (at least) two ASE certified techs. I do not recommend sealer on the rubber gaskets between the upper and lower intake manifold. I do recommend that you follow the torque procedure. The bolts torque to 12 Nm. or 105 inch lbs. The sequence is to start in the center and work your way out end end working back and forth like this. 5-3-1-2-4

if it were me i would install the upper side "brake cleaner clean", and smear just enough oil on the lower to make it kinda greasy.

thought is that in the future, they will come apart in one piece and can be reused.

i tend to do this with throttle body and upper intake gaskets. would make your next plug, wire, or coil change a bit easier as you won't be scraping the surfaces clean and you'll likely be able to re-use the gasket.

i doubt many here would agree with this method though

I have a 2001 LE, plastic manifold. I guess I'm comparing apples to oranges.

I always use "High Tack" to hold my various gaskets in place and to help seal them. I have used it for years. It never dries goopy and doesn't squeeze out since its such a thin film. They have brush on and spray on applications. I prefer the brush on.

These particular rubber gaskets don't need any sealer or RTV. They even appear to be reusable. I've removed the upper intake off my past PT's several times and then reinstalled them with the same gaskets still in place.

To me, the important thing is to start with a good gasket. I've always though the real weak point is the suspect quality of OEM factory gaskets used in this era. If everything is clean and in good condition, Felpro (or similar quality) gaskets should seal the upper intake just fine. I recommend you take this opportunity to change the valve cover gasket at the same time. The 2.4L engine is notorious for valve cover leaks into the spark plug wells. And the original factory valve cover gasket looks like gray chewing gum.

Friendly reminder since I see a couple people seem to be missing key parts of the post.
