Default Turbo Noise

Hello,

I've noticed recently that the turbo's "whine" is not as loud as it once was. Does the sound change with ambient temperatures, humidity, pressure, etc...

Thanks in advance,

LIP

It could be one of two things:

1. The turbo is operating at a lower boost level

2. you have goten used to the whine...

The turbo "whine" volume level is proportional to the boost it is creating. On a cooler day the "Next Generation controller" in our GTs, compensate with lower boost levels. this will make a lower whine.

With turbos, the only time that you have to realy worry is if you hear "Clunking" "Scraping" or "screeching" noises. Whines, Pops and flaping noises are common in turbos.

Ian

Ian
Does this only apply to a vehicle that is at normal operational temperature and then the PCM uses outside ambient temp to control boost or outside ambient and engine temp?

The reason I ask is that I keep hearing that cooler air temp will reduce boost levels, but my GT boosts 2psi more when it is cold, outside temp no lower than 55F. It does seem to drop off after I have been running around town and such, 20 to 30 minutes.

Even if it does only use outside ambient temp it would not make sense to cut boost only at normal operating temp and not a cool running engine, isn't it for overboost protection? If it does boost more with a cooler running engine then this makes a good case for a lower temperature t-stat.

I do have SI.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.
Would I not get an engine error warning code or something if the boost was too low? I find that since it became warmer it sounds quieter...maybe it is just my ears but I dont think so...

Do you all have boost gauges?
Thanks,
LIP

How can I check if I have any leaks? Would this be a cause of lower boost?
Wouldn't the computer try to compensate by raising the boost until the point of giving me an error?

Thanks,
LIP

THis is how I like to check for leaks. If you have an auto its easier.

WIth a stick shift, raise the car and put it on jack stands. Secure it well. Put hte car in gear and get it to about 2k rpm or so and then apply the brakes. Make sure you keep the rpm up though. The car will start to boost and you can hear it, feel it if you hav eyour buddy do it fo ryou.

AUto, same thing, just no jacks required. get on teh brake, pound the gas.
