Actually there is a difference in gearing depending on the year.
It appears that 01-04 indicated "2.7 overall top gear ratio" while 05 and up indicated "2.6 overall top gear ratio". I have checked the VINs of many cars at my junkyards, since they post the VINs on the website, and those have been my findings. Turbo or not, the pattern holds. |

Yep, other changes came in 2007 with variable line pressure. Other changes came in 2009. And even amoung the 2007-2008 models, the parts numbers are different for the turbo tranny compared to the N/A.
Also, 2001/2002 PT Cruiser got the A604/41TE. Starting in 2003, N/A's usually came with the 40TE and mostly the turbo models got the 41TE. The only real different in these are the number of clutches in the packs. Overall, the confusion usually comes from compatibility. In most cases, the auto tranny from a 2001 thru 2006 PT are physically interchangeable no matter the model. The differences are minor and inside the tranny. They mostly have to do with durability and gear ratio. As a rule of thumb for the A604 in general, newer is better since Chrysler made almost continuous changes trying to make this bad transmission design better. And they eventually did. By the era of the PT Cruiser, they were not too bad. And from 2003 forward, there are not near as many reports of failed tranny's in PT's. If you have a 2003-2006 GT, find a tranny from a another turbo PT. It doesn't need to be a GT but should be a turbo. An N/A from this period with have the 40TE with a lighter clutch pack. If 2007 or newer, you will likely need to match the part number on the sticker on the top of the tranny to get the right one. ![]()
