Default LOST TURBO

Say has anyone out there lost their turbo? We have a 2003 Turbo PT; my wife came home with the PT sounding like a police car siren. Took it right to the dealer and they confirmed it was indeed the turbo. Also found the positive cable to the battery was just about corroded into?? Chrysler will not let the dealership stock a PT turbo. Car was taken in to dealership 8/6/04 and is still waiting for a turbo 8/18/04, they are on backorder from Chrysler. Must be a run on PT Turbos. In my opinion, PT Turbos should be treated like any other compact sports car with a Turbo (i.e. WRX, Evo, SRT-4, Volvo S60 R, Turbo Beetles, etc.), they need a cool down period. Although, the owners manual says its not necessary for a cool down period for "normal" driving. Sometimes "normal" driving will entail you to carry a load in the car or climb up hills and it will make your turbo run harder, and I can see some people burning out their turbo under normal daily activities (if you don't give a cool down period).

However, I've seen my friends old turbo volvo station wagon (700 something series) run till 120k miles before the turbo gave out w/o a cool down period and drive it "normal" conditions.

If you have given your turbo a cool down period, and it still breaks, than its pretty much out of your control.

Good part is, the 7/70,000 warranty should (it better!) cover for a new turbo.

Here's an other dumb question:
What's a "cool down period"?

That's not a stupid question. Cool down, means let the engine idle for a few minutes to cool the turbocharger down. My wife won't let me do it in the garage because of the harmful carbon monoxide. It's not like I was going to do it for more than a minute or two, but that's a minute or two too much for her![:I]

I'll try and explain it the easy way [].

Now let's say you were driving your Cruiser like you stole it. The turbo by now is extremely hot from all that exhaust its been eatting to push more air into your cylinders. Common sense would say, that the turbo is extremely HOT and generally heat isn't good for moving parts longevity.

The cool down period is letting your car idle, as an idling car doesn't generate as much heat from the exhaust vs. 6000 RPMS. Since metal components tend to generally cool down fast, the turbo will gradually cool down to the idling temperature of the exhaust. Thus, you reach a point to safely turn off your car and prolonging the life of your turbo. (You can also drive the last leg of your destination around 2000 RPMS to let the turbo cool down)

The cool down period is subjective on how much time is needed before you turn off your car. Generally, 3 minutes of idling is needed for hard driving. My rule is, the harder and longer you drive, the longer you have to wait.

Turbo Timers is an alternative if you hate waiting to turn off your car. You can set a designated time and the car will turn off.

make sure they have the turbo ordered correctly , this is what is called a star hotline part and the mechanic must call mopar and place the order. the parts guy can't just place an order for this part. as of today 8-18-2004 there are 8 turbos on backorder all orders are special handing type orders that is a good thig. thevendor was supposed to supply mopar 48 turbos on the 12th of aug. but they must have had a problem and hat is why they are on back order now. good luck with your problem and i hope you get yur car back soon.

thanks tommy

Another dumb question:

What's the difference between letting the engine be idle for a couple of minutes or turning the car off right away? Sounds like in either case, the turbo should cool down since the car is not being driven.

Thanks in advance.

Latest update, PT still awaiting turbo from Chrysler 8/24/04. We are going on the third week that PT has been at the dealership for repair. Makes one wonder about purchasing another Chrysler product??
Thanks tthrift for the heads-up, all I hope is the dealership gets it right for the replacement turbo. [V][V]
