Default Question on Brakes

My Turbo has 33,000 miles, when should I consider new brakes, and will I need front or rear first. I know this is a dumb question, but heck, I'm just a detail guy. Thanks, will check later, have a Jag waiting for me. Gary

I would think you should replace them no later than 40K miles...but, I am neither a "brake guy" or "detail guy" so my $.02 is worth just that--two cents! [8] I'm sure one of the forum experts will be able to provide you more accurate information. [?]

Your first clue will be when brake light blinks when you punch the gas. The brake fluid goes down as pads wear, and sooner or later, brake light will blink - telling you pads have worn enough for fluid to sometime drop below the low mark. When mine did it, the pads were still pretty thick, but I replaced with ceramic pads anyway and eliminated dust.
You can go to Sci-Fi's site and see a list of available brakes.

The fronts should go first, tho a few folks have reported they needed rears first!!

like QSD said, when the light comes on or you start hearing them skreeching. i replaced mine at 21k. there was praticaly nothing left. and you can do them yourself. it takes longer to jack up the car and take off the wheel than to change the brakes. oh, and i just needed the fronts. back only does like 30% of the braking so they are still good. i used ceramics from napa. they only had them for N/A cruisers, but fit just fine on turbos. if i remember right, they where like $85.

GTcruiser2003:

Did you not have to turn the rotors? Could you just replace the pads.
Thanks,

the rotors were still in good shape so i left them alone. they were still relatively smooth. if you go for some time with your brakes making noise, i.e. pads ran out, you will end up with nice deep grooves. then you have to resurface(not always possible) or replace the rotor.

Over the years with the different cars I've had or worked on, I had the tendancy to replace the front pads every year (as to avoid rotor damage, especially because of my and other's lead feet)[] and the rear pads every two years. This is just an average of all the cars of course, and with semi-metallic brakes. Newer ceramic and kevlar brakes tend to last longer, so I plan to change my front pads at about 18K miles.
