OK, folks, here's some hard numbers for the WRX vs. PTGT debate.
His setup was a stock 2002 WRX, with just a reprogram of the MAP(?) timings, and a new downpipe. He regularly races VW Beetles with his pals, but this was the first time he had the WRX on the track. (He just bought it used recently for $18k....) Mine was 2003 PTGT with ramair hood, H&R coilovers, Eibach sways, and BTG front strut bar. I ran with the back seats out, tire and jack still in, on 1/4 tank of Texan 93 octane. Remember, no S1 on my car. Track conditions were mild tailwind, about 54 degrees, and cloudy. The area around the tree was *not* prepped at all and had a visibly thick and crumbly layer of rubber all over the launch area. I had major wheelspin for all of 1st gear and part of 2nd with my usual launch technique, compared to the rather decent traction I was getting in California. 1/8 mile track, so no chance to try and make up for my hideous R/Ts and wheelspin. 1st Run PTGT____________________________WRX R/T: 0.6354_____________________R/T: 0.9259 60': 2.9517_____________________60': 2.4529 330':7.4593_____________________330': 6.5111 1/8: 10.9367@70.96MPH___________1/8:10.0929@64.80MPH 2 minutes later we had: 2nd Run PTGT WRX R/T: 0.7696_____________________R/T: 0.5808 60': 2.7512_____________________60': 2.2542 330': 7.1034____________________330': 6.4019 1/8: 10.5408@71.38MPH__________1/8: 9.6373@77.07MPH Read what you will from the numbers. My take: Stock WRX vs. stock PTGT - WRX takes it. Stock WRX vs. S1 PTGT - Fairly even, leaning towards PTGT. A lot will depend upon the launch and how long the track is. Paul |

With re-programming of the MAP, downpipe, and timming changes he was not stock. I would consider our Stage 1 as a reprogrammed Map.
Also your 60' times are way slow...most GT's should be closer to 2.35-2.45 60' times on a good track. Since the track was in poor shape his AWD would naturally outshine our non-posi FWD. I test drove two GT's and one WRX before I bought my GT (I've owned 5 Subarus over the years). The WRX did not pull like the GT's on my test drives. I have however raced one WRX at a 1/8th mile track recently and he consistently left me sitting at the launch but I was pulling hard on him until I missed my power-shifts. I promptly went out and bought the STS shifter from Tommy and will try and take him on next season. Deen

mmm, my 1/8 mile was 9.591. that was with back seats out, half tank of gas (93), borla/mopar duals , BTG CAI, and an obnoxious paint job. No stage 1 either.

Mihoshi has more experience on the California Speedway track, I've seen him run 2.2 60's all day long. However, running on a different track you can see he has to adjust to Texas' track conditions.
However, I notice that the WRX didn't have very good 60's either. Both drivers will improve and we'll see some results next time. ![]() |

Like I said in the original posts, the track conditions were
terrible, so my launches where nothing like whay I was used to doing at the California Speedway. In CA, I was able to hook up right from the start, and averaged a 2.2 to 2.4 60' time. I've checked all of my old timeslips, and in CA I was getting a really consistant 9.75 @ 71MPH for the 1/8. I did notice that I hit the same 71 MPH for the 1/8 in Texas as well, but it took me a full second more to do it. At the track yesterday in Texas, I could not get the wheels to hook up until well into 2nd gear. This also probably attributed somewhat to my lousy R/Ts as I probably wasn't even moving for a tenth or few after hitting the gas. You could *see* all of the rubber on the track peeling up in patches, and could hear a very faint crunching noise when driving over it. Paul |

Track conditions on any given day can have a huge impact on how you run. I've now been to the track on 6 different occassions, and each day was pretty consistant within itself, but you can definitely see which days were better or worse, and by how much.
If track conditions are sketchy at best then an AWD car is really going to show its advantage. If you both can hook up you'd have shown much better against him. |
