Default Anyone have any REAL engine mods done?

Just curious. Has anyone gone inside the engine to do thier mods? Things like cams and headwork. I took my SRT4 in yesterday to get some stuff done (oversized valves, angled vavle job, head porting, and intake/exhaust manifold ported). I promised my tuner that I would keep it stock until we got this done (since he is the one porting and whatnot), this way we can get dyno results. If everything comes out cherry, which Im sure it will, the Cruiser might be next. Just curious if anyone had done anything similar in the past.

I'm surprised how few 4-banger wrench-heads do the internal stuff. That is all standard on a V8.

I'm guessing it's because it is much easier and yields better results on an 8. It may not be worth it on a 4. The add-ons work best.

Keep the results posted.

I'm sure Bob Stockhome has. I forgot his URL, but I'm sure someone will chime in with it.

It's much easier and cheaper per HP to just turn up the boost. Our GT engines are pretty reliable to 400-450 HP. The few that have blown up their engines were pushing over 400 HP (closer to 500 HP)without doing internal mods (pistons, rods). Off the top of my head I remember one SRT4 tuner saying they had picked up around 20 HP by changing the cams...that sounds like fairly low return for the amount of time and $$$ involved. On the other hand if your looking for every last HP you can wring out of an engine than time and money don't matter.
One last thing about larger valves and porting...generally what you pick up on the top end you'll lose on the bottom end. You may end up being king at the race-track but you can lose your stop-light to stop-light punch.
Either way your experiance and results should be interesting...keep us posted[8D]

From what I have heard our heads flow pretty well stock. It's not like say a 5.0 mustang that really needs headwork to move the air.

I understand that its all give and take. More topend can be a loss in lowend, but with all the torque it already has, I dont have any worries about losing any stoplight races. I checked into cams and they were about $600 and the ALLDATA reccommended hourage of replacing them is like 11hrs so depending on the shop, a cam swap could be around $1300. 20whp is actually pretty good for cams so that comes out to $65/whp. I guess it depends on what you want to do. My tuner has already done this on another SRT4 and he could consistently stay even with another SRT that could put 2 car on him. Of course, they never had a 'before' dyno so an afterward would have been pointless. In either case, we shall see. Hopefully, the results are muy bueno[8D], but Ill keep you all informed.

I'm not sure. I've read that the GT engines aren't built to handle anything above 300 HP, without new rods & pistons. I think it was Bob Stockum that stated it. Whatever the case, I figure if a person is willing to boost their HP above 300, changing the rods, pistons, & even beefing up the tranny would be included in their list.

Actually, Howell Automotive has a set of Crane Cams for the GT for $399.95. Crane 2.4 DOHC Camshaft Kit #0014 is engineered for street performance on GT's. I don't understand why a shop would charge so much for changing dual overhead cams. [:I] As the word states, the cams are under the valve cover! Yes it's not as easy as that, but a couple of hours should be enough if you have done it before and know exactly how to tackle the job. Try changing a cam on a transverse pushrod engine! [:0] And that didn't take me that long! The head on our engine works so well because it is of a hemispheric design. In other words, YES it is a partial HEMI engine! The top end of the 2.4 engine is pretty easy to work with compared to other engines, and the bottom end is no harder than other engines. The engine would still have to come out of the car to rebuilt or beef up the bottom end. I'm thinking of getting a set of Crane Cams next year, but first ... Stage 1 and all the nice mods to add to it (upcharge pipe, intake pipe, downpipe, etc...).
