Get yourself a boost/vacuum gauge. Whenever you really want gas mileage over fun, keep an eye on the gauge & keep the needle as far in the vacuum range as you can (you'll have to do some gear shifting & will start wishing you had opted for a 5 spd). whenever the needle is in the boost range, the gas is going through your PT like sh*t through a goose. MPG is proportional to the distance of the gas pedal from the floor & to the time it took to get there.

Wow, it is a shame that you guys get bad gas mileage. With my mods (see signature) I get 18-20 stop and go city and 28 freeway (my highest is 31). I have stage 1 ordered, so if it takes it down a few mpg, then I am ok with that, according to everyone else's numbers. Oh yeah, and I am in Milwaukee, one of the worse reformulated gas areas around.

The fun and smile on my face buzzing around in my GT is priceless, for everything else there is the Chevron card.

I have a 5spd and I get 320 miles to the tank cruising and I mean taking it easy, which is not very often. Like taikuchin says, keep it in the vacuum range for mileage. Even in 5th @ 65/70 mph I am turning 3k rpm, not a good range for fuel milage. What are you to do, [:I].

I have an N/A and I was getting 13 mpg before I woke up and got the lead out of my foot. I reset the computer, aired my tires to 38 psi from 29 psi, and now I get 18 mpg around town which still isnt good. Im getting a CAI for xmas, and hopefully that will help, but other than that, i dont know how to get it any higher.

Mileage on these cars seems to be all over the place. I usually get about 17mpg when the majority of my driving is surface streets because I just can't seem to keep my foot out of it. But on the highway, like my monthly roundtrip to San Diego, I get 24mpg. This is with the cruise control mostly off and my speed 80-85mph on the very hilly terrain on the 15 freeway. I can't really complain about that I suppose.

Wait a minute, I have 2 AutoStick GTs and they both get 25-26 MPG at 70 MPH with the cruise control on.

Sounds like Stage 1 and your bigger/wider wheel combo (more rolling resistance) *might* be your downfall. Was your car loaded up with gear? Enough air in the tires? Etc...

Before your next trip, remove the battery cable for 15 minutes and then get your car on the highway. No WOT, rice-killing bursts. Try to get the car to learn, dare I say it, "normal" driving habits.

Scott

Actually, some have reported an increase in mileage with Stage 1. I only picked up a few tenths better MPG while others have reported an extra 1-2 more MPG. My 28.25 MPG average was achieved with the rear-seats removed but I had hundreds of pounds of camping-gear, fire wood, suitcases, ice-chest, etc. in the rear half of the car. In fact all the "gear" was even with the window line or above.

Sorry, but if you're driving faster than 50 mph, then no way are you going to see 26 mpg. The faster you go, the higher you engine revs. The higher it revs, the more gas it burns. If you want to get more mpg on the highway, then you have to stay at 50 mph. I'd rather burn more gas, IMHO. Then again, if you brought a turbo, I don't think you were expecting high mileage. No turbo I ever worked on obtained good gas mileage. [:I] I guess you trade mileage for power; no car's perfect.
turbo diesel jetta's 50 mpg

but of course its a diesel

My PT gets around 25-27 mpg on the highway @ 75-80. I just got an all-time high 29 mpg on a 250+ mile trip. My PT seems to get better milage the farther the needle goes past the 60 mph mark. Around town I get around 20 mpg. I cannot explain the milage I get but i'm not goin to complain.

I am getting the same mpg with Stage 1 as Stage 0. I was hoping to improve with Stage 1.

I rarely step on it. The last trip I never hit WOT.

Is there something wrong with her? Spark plugs, wires or something?

She has about 28k miles now.

I'm open to ideas.

Arthur,

Did you read the post about the windows? At highway speed, open windows are murder on the aerodynamics. Roll up the windows above 40 MPH, and turn on the fan, full blast if it's hot out. If it's too hot, I'd turn on the A/C before opening the windows at high speed.

Joe
