Guys, let's eb realistic. Unless the Pennzoil he was putting in was full of metal shavings, and the Fram filter was running on bypass the whole time, there is no way those things could have caused his problem. I agree that it was probably a manufacturing defect of some sort.
Have to agree. If we were talking 100,000 miles, it would be a factor, not 17,000. [:I]

Did you complain about the whine and did it always sound this way? Were you down on power? Did the car smoke? My point, is the turbo actually bad?

I have 16,500 miles, always used Mobil 1 every 3,000 except one change where I went about 4,000 miles...

The difference in the color of the oil between 3k and 4k was amazing, like gold vs. black, although the apparent viscosity stayed the same.

I'll never go more than 3,100 miles between oil changes, even with synthetic, with this car again.

1ptturbo. Whine came on somewhere in the 10K miles range. didn't pursue it at the time for a variety of reasons that will make no sense to anyone other than me. Never smoked and power stayed the same. Got the car back today (was out of pocket for a week) and guess what! The whine is still there!!! IMHO, the turbo was never bad. The tech who did the work and then drove it simply heard the noise (he did not diagnose the original problem so never heard the whine before) and the rest is history. Will talk with the service manager tomorrow to determine when they are going to replace the transmission.

About oil and filters. This car was never driven hard other than the occasional rice wannabe or Mustang-whipping run. Always cooled before shut down. The oil, when changed, looked new (why not, after 3500 miles in a 17K mile car??) and Fram may not be the best but neither the Pennzoil nor Fram are responsible for the TRANSMISSION or TURBO problem (if there was one).

Thanks for the thoughts and will let you know what DC says next.

Well, maybe transmission, not turbo. I know the turbo is cooled by the Singer sewing machine oil routed from that teeney weeney reservoir behind the spare tire.......[^]

People people please! Treat your PT Turbo's better! Synthetic oil like Mobil 1 are great, and can endure longer between oil changes, but it doesn't mean you should go longer than normal! Our turbos break down oil viscosity quicker than n/a cars! Have you looked at what the oil looks like if you go over 3000 miles! Even with Mobil 1, don't go over 3000 miles between oil changes unless it's necessary! You want to have clean engines, right? Don't give the oil a chance to really gunk up. By using synthetic oil and changing every 3000 miles, it really helps to keep your engine clean, better running, and longer lasting.
