Default Air Box Silencers

Okay now that I've cleaned out the oil for my air box,(see prev post) I removed both the upper white silencer and the lower black silencer/snorkle assembley, I'm curious about the black silencer. This part also has a built in snorkle, which fits over an opening at the fender area, doesn't this bring in the cooler air while driving? Is the removal more advantageous then leaving it in place to bring in the air?

Good question. I would like to know that also. I just installed a Airaid CAI. But could not get the lower box assembly out to remove the large black snorkel.
I would have fought with it more but it was cold & the sun was going down...

You need to measure where you can cut the bottom silencer so it is flush with the inside of the box. Then you can put the snorkle in so it will draw cold air from the fenderwell hole.....You have to kind of pull and rock the box to the left and right to get it out. There are two plungers on the bottom of the airbox that fit into two rubber grommets. Don't rock it too far to the left and right or the plunger can break as I did on my '01. I had no problem on my '03 getting the airbox out.

Some of us have been calling the lower snorkle a silencer therefore it must be a restriction. I tend to agree that it acts as a silencer but I'm not so sure that it's a restriction. It looks rather horn like and may be an aid to air flow with that flare on the end. I have been checking the way that dirt is deposited on the filter element with the snorkel in the airbox and the dirt seems to be fairly evenly spread around. (I'm talking about the Turbo. I haven't laid eyes on the N/A airbox.)
I have no science to back this up, just guessing. I don't think removing it hurts anything and it may sound better to some. Back in the old carburetor days, I used to like the sound of a 4-barrel carb at WOT with no filter. It sounded powerful like it wanted to suck the hood in. [:I]

I would say it restricts air flow because once I took it apart after cutting it off it looked restrictive to me. Just the way I saw it.....Yes, the WOT of a 4 barrel was always music to my ears. What a great powerful sound.

I believe the black "silencer" as many of us call it is also designed to separate any water that splashes up into the air box by pointing the air toward the side of the air box. This forces the air to make a turn prior to going through the filter. As the air makes the turn , the heavier water will impact the side of the box instead of hitting the filter head on .
I also recently installed an AiRaid CAI on my cruiser and it came with a warning to be careful about driving through water.
The black silencer is more than twice the area of the white one , if it restricts it's minimal in comparison.

I've been driving the past 1 1/2 years with that black silencer removed and a 2" hose running from the opening next to the driver side fog light up to the fenderwell hole for the airbox snorkle. This provides cold outside air to the airbox. I live in Oregon where it can rain quite a bit for 9 months out of the year. I've never had a problem with water getting up into the airbox. That black silenser is not a flow through type. You don't realize how much it restricts the airflow until you see it out of the airbox. You can't tell anything from looking at it in the airbox. The three silencers in the intake system were put there to restrict the air flow and make it quiet for those folks who don't like noise. Is it going to hurt those people who want to keep it stock? No, it won't. But, for those of us who aren't stock the intake system along with the exhaust system must both be opened up.

I removed all of the silencers and the snorkel. I replace the snorkel with a larger PVC reducing elbow from Home Depot. I also slightly enlarged the opening in the fender well. To top it off I insulated the air box with self adhesive rubber strips.

Sounds like a good plan [?]

Thanx to all that posted. I took the upper silencer out only, for now I put back the lower, I will most likely remove it once I fab up an elbow to the box.
