Default Oil question

Okay. Heard from dealer - my '05 turbo on order has been built, is being shipped - woohoo!
Question - I know the turbo has a bigger oil filter - what is an oil change? 5 1/2 quarts? I like how my exisiting PT takes exactly 5 quarts and WalMart sells Mobil1 in the 5-quart jugs - perfect. Oh well, I guess a jug and a quart.
Soon as I get it, Mobil1 and K&N filter.

Don, I have personally changed my oil twice and both times I only needed 5 quarts, even with a K&N filter. [?]

Every time my dealer changes oil in my wife's GT we give him 5 quarts of Mobil One and we check the dipstick after we get it back and it shows full. Go figure.

So do we figure the oilpan is just that much smaller for the turbo - because the filter IS bigger?? [:I]
Anyway, 5 qts it is - good news.
Hey, maybe they just recalibrated the dipstick?

The filter is not that huge and it is filled with filtering media that displaced most of the space. You can't just look at a larger filter and think that it will hold that much more oil.

Welcome to the TURBO CLUB, Don! Did you order the SI with it?
You may want to check other posts on changing in the Mobil 1. I think there was a reason some guys felt waiting to the first oil change was the way to go. Don't forget the pictures when you pick it up. [^]

If you look at your owners manual when you get thecar you will see that it says 5 quarts...all of the turbos use 5 quarts with a filter.

I've changed my oil six times now, each time with the Mobil One 5-qt jug (did you notice Walmart recently upped the price from $18.88 to $19.97? - who do they think they are - Target?) and it was a perfect fill every time.

Don,
Yes, its 5 quarts, and no, do not change it immediately or put in a filter right away! Do it after the break in period. All vehicles new have a layer of special lube on the innternals that needs to burn off first with the original oil and putting that high flow filter will just add super fine dust to the mix. I go about 800-1000 miles break in, after that do the oil and filter. If you put the new oil in right away, you will be mixing that burn off and extra particles into good synthetic during that crucial time in the engine's life, basiclly wasting the new oil. just drive mellow for the breakin period, Have some patience....

??? Assembly lube is used to reduce friction in the first time start of the engine when there is no oil in a lot of the engine. Even then they will have pressurized the engine once before start up. Assembly lube is basically gone after the first start. There is no "burn off" and certainly no harm to engine oil. Manufacturers don't even use a "break in" oil any more as far as I know. They simply call for a low "first number" in the vicosity rating of the engine oil. They used to call for an early oil change to dump the breakin oil but no more. IMHO it is a good idea though to still do an early oil change and inspect the oil just to make sure there is nothing bad going on inside.
