Default Turbo noise

Ever since I got my oil sender problem fixed by the dealer, I have been noticing the whine from my turbo. I guess it could be another noise but I can't imagine what else would be loosely related to acceleration and RPM but have absolutely no relationship to vehicle speed (I hear while idling). I have never notice this noise before and I don't think my hearing suddenly improved. Any idea if this noise is foretelling something bad?

Could it possibly be power steering pump? Only because there's a TSB out about mis-aligned pulley causing noise. [:I]

If you are hearing it at idle it probably is not the turbo. You hear a turbo whine when the impellers really get moving in the upper RPM range. I agree with Quicksliverdon, look at the PS pump, that seems to be a common complaint. Mine had a problem for a while but it seems to have cured itself.

Sounds like the fan that kicks on to cool down the engine when it gets hot. Thats normal. Gary

It is a high pitched noise. It sounds too high to be a PS pump. Besides, I would think the PS pump would be more RPM dependent. It should be easy enough to check though. I have yet to lift the hood and listen. I've just been too busy. Maybe this weekend I'll get to it.

Check the intake hose. If it is not on the turbocharger properly, it can suck in dirty air and whistle or whine. One other guy on a forum had a similar noise, and that's what it turned out to be.

Well, I still haven't had a chance to pop the hood but I did try moving the steering wheel back and forth while idling. The pitch changes correspond directly with steering wheel movement. I guess the PS is the culprit. The noise isn't present 100% of the time though. I am supposed to bring the car in on Tues. I have only 7K miles left on the warranty.

Well I went to the dealer. They didn't have my appointment in the book but they did a quick visual of the PS fluid and it was way low. They topped it off and the noise went away. Apparently there is a recall on the PS hoses. I'll get the hoses fixed next week.

I thought the power steering hose recall was for the n/a engines? The n/a recall I know first hand. My PT burned up because of it 3 days before the recall was announced to the NTSA.

I thought the same thing but maybe the plumbing isn't all that different. Sorry to hear about your PT Fryer. I hope they made restitution.

BTW, I didn't hear the noise as I left the dealer but it was back later on in the day.
