Forth is an overdrive gear. To get it to shift from 3rd to 4th in autostick mode you must lift off the power pedal. If you're still on the gas, even a little, it won't shift 'till you do.

You may also notice that the other up-shifts have a slight delay between when you flick the stick and when the trans gets around to shifting if you don't lift. I've practiced lifting and flicking and after a time I've been able to make my "Autostick" sound more like a manual going through the gears.

Down shifting is a no brainer for the most part and will happen a little more instantly.

This is probably a comment about me more than the car but I have driven mine for nearly 40,000 miles and never realized this about the tranny. Just tried it out and you are right!!

I shift from 3rd to 4th without letting up on the gas all the time.

I have a 2003 GT. Did this change from one year to another?

I shift from 3rd to 4th without letting up on the gas all the time. And I use the Auto Stick all the time. Think it also helps with gas miliage when you are taking it easy. Also helps save the breaks. So maybe the Auto Stick is really a 5 speed? If you are in AutoStick and are in 4th, then going up a hill and the trans shifts down by it's self. Then if you AutoStick it to 3rd is drops even lower. What??
O Boy. Ordered a Stage 1 from Tommy Thrift yesterday. Just could not wait any longer.

Many times, what you feel as a shift is the torque converter locking or unlocking rather than the transmission actually shifting gears. You can actually see the tach jump when the torque converter locks or unlocks.

The posts by Robinjoe and White above prompted me to do some "test" shifting with my Autostick trans. If I take off from a stop like I normally do (first one away from the light) and the acceleration is brisk enough to maintain a load on the engine and trans, the trans will not shift into 4th in "autostick mode" unless I lift the gas. If I pull away in a manner that's unnatural for me, as if I'm hauling eggs or Officer Squarenuts is driving behind me, then the trans will shift into 4th when I bump the stick to the right. But why bother, if that's how you're going to drive, why not simply keep the trans in full auto?

As I said before, whenever you are accelerating (as in gaining speed at more than a mile or two per second), the Autostick will not shift into 4th unless you lift on the gas a bit.
