Default understanding turbos?

I just bought a used 2005 touring turbo convert. and understand very little of mechanics. Please be patient. Dumb question [DQ} 1. Is the high output turbo(220hp) on the gt the only difference on the engine over the option(180hp) on the touring edition. DQ 2. I have been reading all of your posts but I do not understand what stage 1, 2 etc. is? Is it a kit you buy from dealer or mopar? DQ 3. First performance changes I should make? I would like faster times from a stop, increasing top speed not as critical, slightly better street handling.

From listening to you guys. I have compiled this list:
Stage 1
Proto type vak kit
crane wires
BTG cat back
Tokico shocks
airraid filtration
eibach sway bars

What am I missing? And any recommendation in San Diego, CA to complete the engine work.
Thanks for the help!

I think you are at a good place to start your research. Read some of the older posts here in history, every topic you mentioned is covered. For starters here is one point. S1 is a kit sold by Mopar, it includes new larger fuel injectors and a new computer chip for your turbo. adds 20 HP and tons of fun. Gary

Stage 1 is not out yet for '05. When/if it does come out it will only consist of a new pcm (computer).

DQ1) - The Turbos are the same engine (different from "regular" PT engine). They are tuned differently so that turbo "lite" can use regular gas and makes 180 HP, GT uses premium and makes 220 HP.
Stage 1 can be put on either turbo engine.
DQ3) - Bang for your Buck, you can't beat stage 1. It's announced, but doesn't seem to be being delivered yet.
Other than Stage 1, intake and exhaust will uncork your turbo.

Is the high output turbo(220hp) on the gt the only difference on the engine over the option(180hp) on the touring edition. No in additon to the extra power you also get what I call the "slap-shift" auto trans, larger brakes with ABS and Trac Control (if that was not an extra option originaly ordered on your car), 17" wheels and tires, and the GT trim DQ 2. I have been reading all of your posts but I do not understand what stage 1, 2 etc. is? Is it a kit you buy from dealer or mopar? DQ 3. First performance changes I should make? eibach sway bars

Like posted above Stage 1 is not available yet for the 05's. While your waiting to see if that will ever happen your most cost effective improvements will be:
1. K&N drop in filter ($40)
2. Aftermarket wires
3. Turbo to stock filter box UP pipe from AMX or Adam
4. Mopar cat-back from tthrift (Tommy) (you'll need the 2.5" pipe size if you go past Stage 1 HP levels and trust me you will)
5. BTG drop springs
6. Eibach sway bars

What am I missing? And any recommendation in San Diego, CA to complete the engine work.
Thanks for the help!

Thanks guys, I am slowly catching on. Why wouldn't I just buy the high output turbo from a gt upgrade the brakes and start using premium fuel.

You have the same turbo as the GT. The pcm is programmed different to alow regular gas and 40 less hp.

So, would'nt my next step be to put a gt pcm on my "lite" turbo and go to premium fuel. Also, if and when stage 1 comes out for 2005 could I put this pcm on my 180 hp and would it jump to around 240. What step am I missing? Thanks everyone.

Don't think you'll find anyone to flash the GT pcm with your VIN and mileage. Only a new or used stage 1 pcm can be flashed/reflashed with the VIN and mileage. Not sure if there were changes for '05 either and I know an '03 stage 1 will not work on an '04 or '05. Don't know if an '04 will work on an '05. I hope the '05 stage 1 comes out.

Yes, with a stage 1 pcm your hp will jump to around 240 hp.
